Now being a lad from the town I have always called this belly pork but down south they call it pork belly. Why then have we or them changed it?

Same as "lolly ice's" in Liverpool as they dont say ice lolly due to the argument well you say lolly pop dont you?

Also why does my mam insist on calling crumpets "pikelets"?

Pikelets are finger crumpets I believe.

In Seaham a fritter is a scallop and a pattie is a fritter. They have batter instead of scraps and a big sandwich is called a bad hand.

And a lot of them sleep with close family memebers, and it is twinned with the Headland

I thought pikelets were the same shape and size as crumpets but much thinner, so that they're nice and crispy when you toast them.MMmmmmmmm.

Supermarkets hardly ever have them in, though

About 20 years I went out with a lass from Stockton and my mate went out with her mate from Boro.

At the time 'bewers' to us Hartlepudlians meant a good looking bewer, whereas in Stockton/Boro it meant slag/prossie.

Another stupid one is that Nottingham people think 'bonny' means fat. Again, imagine the chew when I told a lass (far from fat) that she was quite bonny?

I think the term is pot belly but I can imagine it sounding like pork belly in an accent from the wrong half of England.

...You would'nt call processed peas.... peas processed, or mashed pots, pots mashed, therefore belly pork it has to be.

I have an informed insight as an ex butcher, it is belly pork, pork bellies is an American term probably picked up by a globe trotter(oink) from darn sarf!

A pikelet is a thin crumpet usually from midlands area

Lolly ice is used by pikey scrotes in scumpool cos they is red necked backward types!

Sorry Chessington, the reason I didn`t give a reply to that 1 is this, it`s one of them mother things dependant on from where you were hatched, I originate from the North West and my mum said chucky egg, its all bollox and I have less important issues to deal with!

Todays crumpets are yesterdays pikelets.
I beleive they were called pikelets because in days of yore, they were toasted in front of an open fire on a three pronged long handled fork. Strange as it may seem, this utensil was called a toasting fork.

Until I was eight years old I thought everyone toasted bread that way. Then we moved house and had a gas oven for the first time and it had a toaster.

Life has never been the same since. Neither has toasted (I nearly typed crumpets) pikelets.

I thought a pattie is a bit of crappie meat wrapped in a bit of crappie potato, dipped in batter and fried.
A chipshop way of getting rid of all the crappie stuff and charging for it. Genius really. Or crappie?

Also, as another ex-butcher, I am in full agreement with Butchers Block that it is Belly Pork. Top tip, gently boil for 30 mins before roasting. Remove crackling and put back in hot oven whilst the main joint stands. Belly pork with crispy crackling, Done.
