The Saville report has been published and has categorically stated that those shot or wounded were innocent. No suprise there then! Predictably the Para Regt is up in arms about it and in typical contrition calling everyone that moves a 'hat'.

A fairly typical statement on the Para's ex airborne site is this:

Quote:
I'm disgusted the Inquiry did'nt address the real issue: 110 rounds fired and only 14 killed? Piss poor marksmenship!

It was always going to be a stitch up of the army and a sop to the Republicans.

The fact that it was to be based upon the so-called evidence of Republican trouble makers was always going to ensure this as they were always going to repeat the party line as opposed to what the truth may or may not have been. If they didn't they were getting knee capped. 1,500 Republican "witnesses" telling fibs formalised into a report? They might as well have saved the £200m and proclaimed that the IRA could have whatever they wanted in the report.

Blair knew all of this when he instigated the inquiry, but that's not surprising either as he's one of them and it'll have been part of his "Peace Deal" that he wanted to be remembered for that all of the blame for that incident would eventually fall upon the armed forces.

The report is fit for bog roll and nowt else.

I'll be waiting for the inquiry into the Peterloo massacre next. OK, it was in the 19th century and witnesses may be a bit of a problem, but I'm sure the legal profession can overcome that little 'hitch' ... and don't forget it was the British Army involved yet again. Compensation and trebles all round.

Can't pin that one on the paras. Manchester yeomanry to blame for Peterloo and they were clearly on horses, no parachutes anywhere near them.

Sorry Ripper but its absolutely a spot on verdict. Its always been known within military circles that four members of 1 Para lost it that day, two in particular were hugely out of control. It was pure and simply murder.

Mr 5, Georgiou and his mates let down your regiment badly that day. They did the Parachute Regiment no credit whatsoever and were directly responsible for the deaths of many many soldiers in the aftermath.

I don't for a second tar the whole regiment with the same brush but bad apples there definitely were.

PS: while McGuiness is on the telly, maybe he'll apologise for Warrenpoint and many many other IRA atrocities. My point is that I would happily shoot every single IRA member, trouble is that the people killed weren't IRA.

I agree. I like most people growing up in the UK in the 70's were fed a pro British view of Bloody Sunday. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the awful events it was the single most biggest recruiting day for the IRA and IMHO turned the "troubles" into a dirty protracted war.

The publishing of the report should be a further step towards peace & reconciliation. You have to make peace with your enemies no matter what side you're on.
