My job has meant I've regularly been staying and working in Hammersmith over the last 3 years, the area I stopped in has mostly residential streets and hotels/b&bs. I tend to go across to Earl's Court to eat, and there's a great pub called Latymer's on Hammersmith Road which has a Thai kitchen, that's worth a look.
As Chip says though, you've got the whole of London to choose from, just get an oyster card and get to know the tube.

Hammersmith is ok, Ealing, Chiswick and Turnham Green are nicer and only a tube stop or two away.

Plenty of good pubs and gigs around there too.

I worked in hammersmith for 16 yrs . its ok some nice parts particularly down by the river .there was a good pub called the stone mason on a rd that runs parrell to king street but not sure if its still open as i moved 3 yrs ago. some nice pubs like the ship and the rutland by the river. hammersmith good as a hub to travel about. some good pubs and restaurants in the following places ealing get there by tube in 15 min, chiswick by bus in 10-15 min , fulham 5-10 min, richmond15 min by tube or 25 min by bus and putney 10-15 min by bus- all of these areas are nice and fairly upmarket .shepherds bush -ok pubs and good shopping centre-westfield.your about 35-45min by tube to heathrow.hope this helps.enjoy!!
