But was it not said by John Swigert, Jr.

Because sorry to contradict you it MOST CERTAINLY was said by Swigert

A misquotation of the radio transmission made by Swigert and repeated by Lovell ("...Houston, we've had a problem...") has become widely quoted in popular culture as "Houston, we have a problem."

Swigert said it first apparantly and Lovell made the radio transmission back to Mission Control.

He was the one that repeated what Swigert had said.

So that's why everybody thinks Lovell said it.

What I meant was that it is a common misconception that Lovell said it.

True even with a university education, you believed Lovell said it.

I on the other hand only got educated up to Longlands College Middlesbrough standard.

Then again during my school years you actually had to STUDY to pass exams not just get your name and exam number right at the top of the paper to get 25% of the marks.

1975 exam question , "Who said Houston we've had a problem"

Answer given Jim Lovell ,marks gained 0

2010 exam question, "Who said Houston we've had a problem"

Answer given Jim Lovell marks gained 33% of the full marks of the question on the grounds that Lovell was in Apollo 13 with Swigert and Fred Haise, so really any of them could have said it.
