we started really well...........again............and had chances to be two up. O'Donovan was put through just before Monky scored and, from a tight angle, put it outside of the far post.
Once again we couldn't hold onto a lead. This one lasted all of three minutes.
Hartley got done for the first, something which wingers have always done to full backs, still do, and always will do but it was compounded by our central defenders not being able to clear the cross. Then after the first header came back off the bar a striker, Lee Barnard, was able to pick his spot. A free header for a striker stood unmarked yards from goal.
Their second came from dithering where two opportunities to clear the ball were spurned and Gamble, under pressure of his own making, turned the ball back to Clark. Clark completely failed to control the ball allowing Lambert the room to pick his spot.
Their third was a copycat of the second where opportunities were there to clear but dithering allowed their man the chance to turn the ball into our net, which he gleefully accepted.
The errors apart we matched Southampton WHEN and only WHEN we played our passing game to feet, but as the game wore on we played more and more long, high balls to our front men which were gobbled up by the Saints defenders. We just didn't win enough in the air but did we stop trying that ever failing tactic? No we didn't.
The net result of this was that we couldn't keep hold of the ball long enough to create chances or worry their defence, Our full backs were just launching it and, as usual, it kept coming back.
This was the main difference between the sides. They took the pressure away from their defence by coming short, picking up short passes and then building up attacks by keeping the ball, using the old "pass and move" idea.
We don't seem to be able to do that for any sustained periods. Instead we break down an attack and then hoof it up to diminutive forwards, lose it and then the whole process starts again. Why our coaching staff don't seem to recognise this is baffling. Then again the very same coaching staff took off an attacker in the dying minutes, with us behind, and replaced him with Mackay who, at best is neither an attacker or a threat at this level.
I have no comments to make about Turner because I am sick of bashing my head against a brick wall. How that man keeps his job............
Fans magnificent...................stewards OTT as usual.

Just seen the highlights on BBC.

What on Earth was Clark doing for their second goal? That should have been dealt with.

As for Peter Hartley's mistake for their third, together with Sam Collins' own goal earlier in the season, that just seems to sum us up this season. sadx

What a cracker of a goal from Austin though!! What a pity!!!
