I just returned from a couple of days over the lakes. What an incredible place (even when its friggin cold!)

It was a real eye-opener that in less than a 2 hour drive you can see scenery such as that. I will definitely be going again

I have put some photos below. Apologies that they are quite large files but its pointless showing 'thumbnails'.

I must say that I was very disappointed with Windermere - there is feck all there! I may aswell have drove to elwick! Going up to Ullswater area was just incredible (and not to mention terrifying driving a RWD car on some of the narrow roads!!)

Canny pictures them like. Not too sure about the perv next to the Porsche who has been indulging in a spot of 'seagulling' in the car park mind.

I love the lakes me. If you like that kind of landscape get yerself further up and into the west coast of Scotland.

But the big question is did you resolve your differences? Or did you go by yourself!!

That hair could do with a good comb through it.

Mr EAD will tell you the only place going to at the lakes is Ullswater. Did a trip to Windermere before and like you say, it's rubbish.

It's also that bit closer, used to be able to do it in an hour and a half as it's the first lake you hit off the A66 I think.

Dead Right. The areas around Ullswater are incredible, and only an hour and a half away.

Drove that Kirkstone Pass hundreds of times, best scenery in the UK I reckon.

Great pics Grave, I'm going over there in March for 2 days walking, I was looking forward to it but now I'm REALLY looking forward to it!!

I wouldn't fancy driving round up towards Glenridding this time of year, I did it one Summer and it was a second gear job all the way and even then I thought I was going to die. Decent place to snuff it, mind.

'the struggle' I think its called...very apt name.

Some nice shots there, particularly the one with the two Carlisle Utd groupies on it.

Most people hair would stick up after a drive like that! It was scary as hell. My car has no traction control or anything and is rear wheel drive (oh and the brakes are a bit iffy anyway!) I got such a buzz from it like - it beats any rollercoaster thats for sure! The bit with the 2 sheep/goats was scary too. I was going round a blind bend and a car just happened to be coming the opposite way. The driver and passenger waving frantically. I slowed down just in case and fortunately did not plough straight into the sheep/goats. They just casually carried on strolling along, not a care in the world.

We were only there for 2 days but it was probably the most memorable trip away I have ever been on. It was just SO quiet. There was barely a soul around. There was barely any wildlife either presumably due to the time of year and the lakes being frozen.

I will definitely go back there. It made me wonder what Im doing living in Thornaby when there are places like that left in the world.

We stopped in a pub called the Queens head on the way which was absolutely packed! They were about the only people we saw that whole day! A chip butty cost a fiver  (but it was nice like)

Drive there Phil, then you can spend the 2 days over there  (I know that you meant)

I wouldnt mind driving Hardknott Pass, been donkeys years since my mam drove us over there!! She said she'd never do it again! Theres that light railway over there too. Like you say the scenery is amazing. You cant go wrong with spending time over there.

which is the pass at the back of langdale??

we accidentally drove up and down it once, terrifying!! especially when another cars coming down and you have to roll back to a pasing point!
I literally had to close my eyes to look over my shoulder - the drop was too much for my vertigo to bear!

when we got down the car had overheated and we had to refill the water tank using water from the stream.
brilliant experience like, but not one I'd do again in a hurry!

Aye, we stayed at a cottage in Little Langdale a few years ago, another amazing area. Village had about 6 houses and a massive pub!![/quote]

We stayed there a few years ago in a cracking little cottage with great views across to Wetherlam a bloody great mountain with ridges and plenty scrambling. Love it. The pub is The Three Shires Inn as it is at the point where the old counties of Lancashire, West Moreland and Cumberland met. A mighty fine pint of Jennings and other locally brewed delights I seem to remember.

I love the Lakes and would move there in a shot if I could persuade the wife. Defo if I win lotto and spend every day walking the Wainwrights over and over again.
