My laptop seems to have become knackered so I am using my old PC which seems to run reslly slow, is there anyway I can speed it up or is it because it is old it is going slow?

For my laptop when I try to turn it on I just get a grey screen with a few very thin static type lines on it, how can I get this to work sctatchinghead

try removing temporary files and doing a defrag,the laptop is it insured if it is drop it :wink: sounds like the screens knackered

I could do with having the laptop repaired really as it has a fair few photos on it especially of the littleun that I never got round to backing up :uhoh:

can't you connect it to a monitor,has'nt it got an connection on the back,a lot of them have it for connecting to a projector for powerpoint presentations,you should be able to get a lead from maplins

A mate of my brothers thought it could be a loose visual cable, so I gave the laptop a shake and it now works :shock: clappp

My laptop is knackered again tonight and no amount of shaking is fixing it this time sadx

I am stuck on my slow PC again but that won't let me on Facebook it says

Connection Interrupted

For some reason my PC won't play any of the You Tube videos that have been posted in the main forum, is there anything I need to download to let them work, could this also be the reason why it won't let Facebook load, I seem to be able to get on most other websites sctatchinghead

You need to update your flash player, and probably your version of java too

I have updated both of those and am still having no luck banghead Facebook is the only site I can't access as well

I get a different message now it says


The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading

Lets try checking for spyware, go here http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button

Download it and let it update then do a full scan see what it fines and remove

Cheers Mr Cribbens I downloaded that then ran it and it found 4 files which I have now deleted but still no luck confised

You could try the version of Facebook that I use - http://lite.facebook.com/ works for slower PC's and Connections. I use it cos it keeps it clear of all the JavaScripted shite on the site.

one final thing to try, open a command prompt (go to run and type cmd) Once there type - ping www.facebook.com make sure it comes back with 4 replies. If it does then its defo in the browser if it doesnt then you got a rogue entry in the host file. Let me know the results

ok last thing, go to this location, C:windows\system32\drivers\etc you should see a file called hosts, double click it and when it ask what program to open with choose notepad.
When its opened it should look like below

There should be only one entry like the 127.0.0.1

Ok lets trying running a program called Hijackthis to check whats in the start up
http://go.trendmicro.com/free-tools/hijackthis/HijackThis.exe
Click the link and install then do a system scan and save log.
Copy and paste what it finds so i can see whats running at start up

Ok run it again and put a check mark in all the ones with * beside them and **
Then choose remove - Restart if it doesnt tell you need to anyways and try again on face book
