Well played the lads. clappp clappp clappp

This reminds me of a time when I was a lad.
My memory is a bit hazy on this...help required from Mr Madjohn.
As far as I remember it goes like this...............

The Town's boys got to the latter stages of the English Schools competition where they were drawn against Manchester boys.
Captain of Manchester was Wilf McGuinness, who later played for Man Utd and then managed that club for a while.
The match was played on a Saturday morning and the Vic was rocking.
Mums, much like today, were threatening to strangle any kid who went anywhere near their little darling. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe there was a crowd of around 14,000 there ( help Madjohn) and Manchester boys won.

It could also be true (memory again) that Pools played a league game on the afternoon, another decent crowd, prompting the possible question...............on which day did the Vic have more than 20,000 spectators???

Sorry for all the vague bits but, just as now, the lads did us proud.

Wouldn't you just love it if these kids could go one better and win it, after all these years.

Go on boys.....................you can do it.

Are you allowed one over age player in this competition? Either that or one of the centre halfs' Dads was listening to a lot of Oasis thirteen years ago.

I remember the Mail doing a feature on a match along those lines not so long ago.

Liam Gallagher goes to Tunny!

Mr EAD, I didn't know you were ex-St Teresas. So was I, mind you, long before you were there. I left in 1969, but not before my first trip to Carlton Camp for passing the 11plus.

OK mr derwent, I've done a bit of asking around...

The match you are talking about is almost certainly from the English Schools Trophy in 1952/53. West Hartlepool Boys beat Stoke-on-Trent 1-0 in the 5th round before beating Manchester Boys by the same score at home in the last 16. They then drew 3-3 with Chesterfield Schools in the quarter final before losing a replay 2-0. Chesterfield went on to lose to Swansea in the final. McGuinness was captain of England Schools that season, and will have been in the Machester side as well.

Thanks Mr Madjohn..............really appreciate it.
Do you know the actual date of the match and if Pools played the same day.
I started following Pools in 1952. We lived in Derwent St at the time, hence the username.

No idea. The results are from the FA Yearbook for that season and no dates are given for any round. I'm sure I'll find it in the library some time. I've made a note of it as something to look for.

Thank you.
