I thought one of the soldiers might have commented on it and I may have missed comments on here but earlier in the week the wife of Olaf Schmid was very impressive and dignified and an example to everyone at her husband's funeral.

It put the hysteria generated around Jade Goody and the likes into perspective.

It was very moving from a lady with class.

He was a bomb disposal expert who got killed in Afghanistan, the day before he was due to return (I think).
Regarded by his fellow soldiers as a bit of hero because he'd been so good at his job.

Agree with Frodraff & Mouldy - An honourable woman with a great deal of integrity.

The Felix lads are invariable the bravest of the brave (Felix is the call sign for bomb disposal). The old Ordnance Corps was known as blanket stackers because its the stores regiment but they also provided bomb disposal crews in Ireland. Forget SAS/Para's/ Marines, these lads stand at the top of the heap when it comes to heroism.

Rest in peace Staff Sgt Olaf Schmid MC.

I just had a flashback;

I once went on a course at Kineton which is the forces ammunition stores depot and its where they teach bomb disposal amongst other things. There is a sign above in the classroom that reads:

"If at first you don't succeed, then maybe bomb disposal isn't for you"

I have the utmost respect for these lads.
