Mandleson for all his faults was instrumental in bringing an awful lot of European grants to the town. He was a far far better MP that that snivvelling little shit that represents the town these days.

Jeff Stelling is a TV personality who mentions Hartlepool on his program and to be fair, promotes the area whenever he can. Nevertheless most of what Jeff Stelling says is tongue in cheek where as Mandleson's achievements were real. No contest in my opinion, the council have it the right way round.

I saw the report in the Daily Mail about the controversy surrounding the decision to give Lord Mandelson a title, and heard that the Labour group within the Council had submitted his name so that either all the candidates were awarded titles or not.

Although it was a bit cheeky, I think giving both Mandelson and Sir Jeff titles was the right thing to do. They both deserved it, and Jeff should not have been left out for Mandelson's gain.

Sorry its Mandelson for me someone with real power who actually brought some investment to the town. Jeff's just a Pools supporter who supports his home town ( Do ypunot think its mpre than a co-incident gives him a "hook" in the business he's in)

There's no reason to have just one honorary president. Many organisations award a presidency to honour peope who have made a significant contribution and there are often more than one at any one time.

No reason why Pools shouldn't honour Mrs Stellings eldest or is it youngest in this manner.

But councillors though are supposed to be the directly elected representatives of the people....that's you.

An honourary presidency of the football club would be more appropriate. To make someone a freeman of the town simply because he mentions the place on TV demeans the honour in my opinion. It's similar to the way OBE's / MBE's etc are completely worthless these days.
