I remember a similar thing happening at Pools when a York player had a bullet header thaat just stopped dead about 3 yards from goal, looked a certain goal but just literally stopped dead - it was in the game against York 1999 just before Hendo hit that quality overhead kick. I think West were using the vic in the same season and the pitch as a bog
