Roughly where abouts ? I vaguely remember going down Lynn street as a small child - couldn't have been for than 5 or 6 and into the old market. The only thing I remember about the market was the smell.

The Empire was (very approximately) over the road from Marks & Spencer.
Which itself was between Woolies and the Market.

Hope this helps.

This reminds me of long long ago when I had a job doing research into Hartlepool theatres for a book that was supposed to be in the offing, to be published by the Council.
There were about 8 theatres in town at the turn of the century and a motley crew of actors would tour the country mostly doing music hall or Victorian melodrama. I often wonder whether that book was ever published after all my hard work (!). The council employed a sci-fi novelist from Seaton (called Mark Adlard) to write it up but I somehow doubt whether he ever did.

By the way Mr I, the smell you spoke of in the market, was toffee apples and treacle toffee wasn't it, from the sweet shop in the corner. I remember it well

I'm guessing it was roughly where the pink blob is on this map, with the blue being the market, tthe yellow M&S and the orange Woolies?

clappp clappp

But I'd put the pink blob another 25/30 metres south cos where it is now was the side entrance to the North Eastern!!!!

Near as dammit.

er... bollocks

In this photo you can just see the EMPIRE sign in the yellow oval. Boots is right next to M&S. Freeman Hardy Willis is the shop on the corner of the Woolworths block. The very last building, far left, is Robinson's Emporium. The car parked in the street is a baby Austin. There were no parking restrictions at that time which just shows how little motor traffic there was. Anything else?

Is that the same Amerigos who have/had the ice cream vans. Not sure if they still do but I think that they had the Picadilly Bar Ice Cream Vans based in Elwick Road

it was on the corner of freeman st and lynn street (non the wiser - need an older map)

anyway the righthand side downstairs (as you look from over t'road) was dunns and next to it left hand side were timpsons . also somebody rented rooms in there in 1922 and formed a social club - it were you genuine original hartlepools united supporters club and the club were the first floor on the left as you look from across road - so there you have it - a photo of this to be used in a forthcoming book of course (plug plug plug!!! - still have another one out you know - need to sell em!!pm me!!) together with some other top info.....boring myself now!

I'm sure there were 3 entrances to the market, one of which doubled as the Civic Restaurant (your old map seems to bear this out).

Do you have ANY kind of photo showing the missing shops?

Looking at the photo I would agree, one entrance at the Civic, one between Eagle and the wool shop and a central one between Singer and Find It Out

I do have a Lynn St pic that I can't place. It could be the block between Princess St and Adelaide St, or it could be somewhere south of Musgrave

That is most definitely Lynn Street. Indentifiable on there are left to right the Farm Stores Ltd. (the black shop with the white sign), Hoggetts, Hadrian (ironmonger/DIY?), and Halfords.

As for the shop on the corner to the left, I'm working on it.

That smell in the old market hall will always remind me of rock fish. Me mother used to buy them for me when I was an ankle biter and I always hated them. Being a sopisticated sort of cove I always preferred chocolate eclairs. Anyway, the Picadilly Bar was the first time I ever saw a smoked glass and chrome design and the first place I ever tasted lime and lemon.

That is all.

I think you're right Mr Katcha, toffee apples. When they opened the new market they initially moved the smell too but its gone now to be replaced with the smell of rotten veg.

I wonder if Bretts used to manufacture sweets in the old market.
