The current squad has broken 1 club record(consecutive games without conceding a goal)and equalled another(consecutive wins), something that neither the 90/91 or 02/03 promotion winning teams could do.

How do you think the current squad compares against those 2 very good sides?

From the 3 teams the first XI would be or do you think differently?

GK Poole 91

RB Knobbs 91
CB McPhail 91
CB Lee 03
LB Mckinnon 91

RM Honour 91
CM Tinkler 03
CM Humphreys 03
LM Dalton 91

CF Allon 91
CF Baker 91

Subs

Dimi, Boland, Nelson, Barron, Williams 03

Nelson and Dimi close to getting in beut they need to show the form of the last 10 or so games consistantly........... If you jiggle the team about then you might get Boland in as well......

I would have no other centre back pairing than Clark and Nelse.

Porter would edge Bakes out.

Can you imagine our squad with McKinnon, Allon and Honour in it today?

But you can only include the promotion years teams surely, Porter has been injured most of this season so cannot even be considered like Flash was in 2003.

This years team have been good lately but have given away too many soft goals early on in the season. Lee / Nelson was the only debateable one, if Nelson continues his excellent form and we get promotion then he will easilly get in but until then.

Id swap Nelson and Clark for McPhail and Lee, and Boland and Liddle for Tinkler and Humphreys, Jonny.

Also Dimi for Poole.

Dimi

Knobbs
Nelson
Clark
Mckinnon

Honour
Boland
Liddle
Dalton

Baker
Allon

Poole,Eifion(03),Richie(03),Monkhouse,Lee.

Heres my stab at it:

GK: Close but I think Kevin Poole just edges it. They say that Dimi is good enough to play in higher leagues and maybe even the premiership. Similar things were said about Kevin Poole the difference is that we now know that in his case at least they were all true.

Back four: Have to start with Nelson, in my opinion the best central defender ever to play for the club. Alongside, probably Ben Clark. I don't think a pairing of two similar players works as we seen with Nelson and that long streak of piss from Sunderland, Collins. At LB surely Rob McKinnon betters any other option but on the right I'm struggling to decide but I'd plump for Nobbs.

Midfield then. I'd include Brian Honour for his passion alone but I'm not convinced he is the best option skills wise. It's a straight choice between Boland and Tinks in the holding role in which case you'd have to say Tinks for no other reason that Boland has not played enough games to merit ousting Tinkler. Next Dalton and Sweeney are similar I'd plump for the former. Humphreys at his best would probably get the final berth.

Up front: Dead easy. Allon and Porter.

So we end up with:

Poole

McKinnon
Clark
Nelson
Nobbs

Honour
Dalton
Tinkler
Humphreys

Porter
Allon

Hold on. If you're going to make comparisons with past successful teams there are a whole load of other names you need to consider.

You could start with some of the players in the last squad to win seven straight league games.

Green
Sheridan
Gill
Drysdale
Bell
Wright
Mulvaney
Phythian
Fogarty
Hepplewhhite
Parry

Then there's the small question of the squad that took us to our highest ever league finish...

Oakley
Waugh
Moore
Burlinson
Luke
Johnson
Bilcliff
Lumley
McGuigan
Stamper
Folland

There are some serious contenders in there.

It wasn't a comparison historically the question specifically was about those above.

Also I think it would be a short conversation, they are only a couple on any of these boards who could give any first hand opinion.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Chris Westwood? or what about Dean Emerson(92 I know it wasn't a promotion year) one of the best midfielders I've ever seen in a Pools shirt

Surely our highest ever finish was in 03/04 and 04/05, when we finished 6th in the second from bottom division?

Hey don't go bamboozling me with your second-from-bottom/second-from-top shenanigans!
We finished second to the team that got promoted to the (real) division 2. That's better than 6th in my books.
