Just been watching it and what a cracking programe. Both my Grandads were in the Merchant Navy but i dont know if they done the Atlantic runs as been a young kid i never took the time to ask them about there time during the war Now i could sit all day asking them questions but its about 25 years to late.

I remember sleeping at my granparents and my grandad used to wake me up during the night screaming he used to still have bad dreams about when he was sunk and he was the last one to get out the engine room before they shut the hatch leaving a load below.

my other grandad was a bit like Uncle albert of fools and horses and was even sunk twice in 1 day according to me dad

My father was in the Russian convoys. A few years ago there was a medal awarded to those who too part in these when i contacted the people concerned I couldn't get this as my father had died, so much for his sacrifice I was not happpy especaiily for my mother who remebered him being away for months on end in dangerous circumstances.

Have just read "Ace Of Aces" by Teddy Suhren who was a "maverick" U-boat captain during ww2 and never towed the line with the nazi leadership. He would give out SOS calls for the ships crew left a drift following a sinking.
