I remember the Good Intent .. roughly where the fire station/back of the Post Office sorting office are now I reckon. There was a pub on virtually ever corner along there once. Full of under-18s getting pissed on Mackeson touches.

Opposite the Stranton where Alife Smithson was the main man. Choccabloc on an a Friday/Saturday night with a queue a mile long. A look from Mr Smithson himself, and we were in. Great days

Alf was famed for his stoppybacks in the days of 10.30 closing. I've been boozing in there after midnight and two coppers have walked in in uniform, had a look round, and gone out again.

Good intent was way before my time, but I remember my Mam talking about babysitting for the landlady (Mrs Hollis?), I think this Mrs Hollis took over the Nursery a few years later

You're all correct when you say the Good Intent was in Stockton St but it was'nt opposite The Stranton, it was situated about where the Car Park between M&S and the back of the Post Office is.

A fly lad was Alf. As the night wore on, up went the prices. If them two coppers came in very late they wouldn't have been able to afford the prices. Mind you he was very lenient to the coppers, they often got a free pint.
