... today, the ages were criminal, the few lines were touching and we have people on here putting more 'emotion' into a few totally irrelevant friendly results, funny old world innit.....

I agree. I visited some cemeteries last year in northern France and it does give you a sense of the total waste of young lives.
I would add though that the war graves people don't half make a good job of looking after them.
I even found a relative who was 19 when he died, was in tears at the sight of it.

the self centredness of today's society in general is in direct contrast to the values of people from that bygone era. I think about all the young men who died never knowing what it was like to have raised a family and do all the things we have taken for granted all our lives.
This applies to all wars, very sad that they are ultimately caused by people who will never face any flying bullets themselves, regardless of which side is the "bad guy".

I took the kids over to the Ypres area a couple of years back, and it was truly an unbelievable experience. The ground is still totally pitted from the shelling back then. I would defy any human being to go there and not be moved to tears by the sheer scale and horror of it.

Lest we forget.

There are some places everyone should visit if they can. Top of the list is Tyne Cot cemetery at Paschendaele and of course Auchwitz. As for respect, I don't believe there is any place on the planet or a group of people who are more respectful than the little town Ypres.
