Has Willie Boland on it as a free. Is that simply because his contract is up and Pools were waiting for him to prove his fitness.

Or has he now been told he not required and has been released.

He's probably thinking that they would rather stay around the intensity of London or warmth (relative) of the South coast than come up to a small town on the cold North East coast; or that if they did come up they might be more likely to become unsettled than a local lad.
