more culture crossover language - the death of our language being expedited by 'popular' culture, 'musicians' and 'actors'

You can't say anything on here that's been created in the last ten years can you?

It's just a little thing to say you made a mistake, simples.

Don't have a cow man.

It's probably from American films, as Katcha says. That's why sensible people don't like it, Yubep.

I hate, 'I'm good', as a reply to 'How are you?'
I always think, bloody hell, I'm not going to ask after them again, then.

No it's not. That would be a good anglo-saxon response.

No really, I genuinely didn't know. Most of my mates here are Aussies and New Zealanders, couple of Irish, couple of septics and a few Brits but I never read or heard it before.

So it didn't and doesn't make sense. Yeah move the language on but you have to keep grammar or it just becomes feral grunting.

I don't mind feral grunting. Just the saying of things because 'trendy' film actors have said them first. You change a word/phrase if you think of a better/more descriptive one, not otherwise imo.

I shouldn't worry, Spendikins. Most generations have their shite words and sayings. Mine did too.
But thankfully not many of them stick around that long.

Someone pointed out an interesting one to me. Our yank friends have adopted the habit of saying "I could care less" when they mean "I couldn't care less". This is presumably because they read the expression before hearing it. For it to make sense you have to imagine it being said in a New York Jewish voice much in the style of "I should be so lucky".
Unfortunately the nuance escaped them. But it'll eventually go away, although probably not before invading our shores.

I feel like saying 'I asked HOW you ARE, not what you think you are', fooking numbskulls

It's almost as bad as people saying 'Can I get' when ordering a drink or food, I mean I don't know, can you?

I get sick off people saying to me at work, would you like my account number. One of these days I'm going to say, 'No let me guess who the fook you are'. rage

Well amongst my circle there are two New York Jews, Hassman and Steinwinder, and they don't say it either, or else not in my hearing they don't. They're both pretty stereotypical though, I heard one say 'yada, yada, yada,' and the other has said 'whassup,' when he meant hello. Still no 'my bad' though. sctatchinghead sctatchinghead

Maybe it's just a Hartlepool thing. Like 'bewer' or 'gadgie.'

That annoys me too billy, we also get people calling and they just start blabbing about there problems, without saying who they are, account number or anything, and expect us to simply know everything about them, like our job is to personally look after them and we sit all day waiting for there call.

"My bad" is American urban Ghetto slang, I believe, meaning "SorrY, my mistake."

Got it in one.

Or they start "It's Mrs Smith here from Birmingham" as if they are expecting you to say "How are you doing Flora, long time no speak"

It's a slang phrase that originates from the urban ghettos of the United States of America...

Therefore, it's American urban ghetto slang.

Speaking of poetry, I came upon this recently. By S. Heaney.

"...Edward Thomas in his khaki tunic
like one of the Evans brothers out of Leitrim,
demobbed, 'not much changed', sandy-moustached and freckled
from being, they said, with Monty in the desert."

I can't swear it but I'm almost sure that's about the other, less well-known Monty.

Nah, it's your duty as a grown up to counteract everything youth do and say, that's all. It's a good general principle. That way you curb their wilder excesses without having to think too much.
