thats them fucked then. people only signed up for setanta for the premier league, i expect them to go bust within 3 months and cease broadcasting, i was reading they need 1.9 million customers to break even, they currently have 1.2 million, i expect alot of people to cancel their subscriptions now, its sad. The rights to the footy are going to auction, you know sky will get them so whats the point in the auction

Well I hope to God the BBC don't waste a bucket of taxpayers/licence fee money on bidding for the rights. Yes I'm sure it would get them big viewing firgures for live games but don't think it would be right for them to contribute any further to lining the pockets of millionaire footballers or the business interests of Americans/sheiks/Oligarchs etc.

In terms of viewing numbers I'm sure I read somewhere that Sky only have approx 4-5 million subscribers so they must rake in a vast amount of revenue from advertising to pump the money they do into various sports. Maybe I'm a traditionalist but with the Ashes coming up I think its a disgrace that ultimately they can only be seen live on a minority broadcaster, last time around it got people interested in cricket. Look at what has happened to boxing recently due to a lack of coverage on the terrestrial channels.

With 4 million paying at least £300 a year to them, that is 1.2 Billion income, and a lot of people will be paying double that amount.

Shame, Setanta tried to fight it out with the big boys and have lost, like tigro said they will be out of business shortly, people wont stay with them for the blue square premier and scottish footy!

Agreed on the numbers but isn't the current deal something like 1.3bn for 92 matches a season just for the football never mind all the other sports that they have bought the rights for. They are obviously a successful business but I'm assuming the advertising significantly props up their balance sheet
