No mate, but RC is spot on, what happens at the Mail happens at lots of other papers up and down the country. The days of sports editors getting real stories about the club, rather club spin, are long gone.

The question is do you need to be a fan of the club to be a good sports writer?

I'd say "No" because your writing would be more objective. You'd also be less afraid of upsetting the club chairman and the rose-tinted speccy brigade.

Having said that, Sam Lee was/is a fan and she was, in my humble opinion, a good writer ... straight from the heart ... which sometimes works.
