Agreed - though the word 'Indefinite' is crucial
Prisoners call them IPP sentences, which means you are only allowed to consider parole after a certain time.
So in the boyfriends case 10 years before considering parole - but a tarrif of 12 years.
Many prisoners serve well over their tarrif. I know one who's tarrif was eight years and they've served twenty.
The vast majority of prisoners on IPP sentences serve well over their tarrif because the probation and prison service can and often do say they are not ready for release.
Still disgusting and I wouldnt blame anyone chucking the key away but a crucial point nonetheless
