Tom Waits is like Bob Dylan - a fantastic songwriter but a pretty dull singer.

Try a TW song out on Paul Young and see how it improves:

Oooohh Mr Poolier
Those two videos highlight one major thing to me:
that Tom Waits is far far better than Mr Paul dreary Young
That's a great song in my opinion - or it is when its sang by Waitsy
I like swordfishtrombones as well.
I've liked Tom Waits since I was 16 (1986) when I was pretending to be cool and someone I thought was well cool gave me the Blue Valentine album
I put it on and thought 'what the fuck is this?"
And then I loved it because it wasnt pretentious as half the shite I was listening to at the time
Tom is better than most of them in my opinion....

I actually like TW's version of Soldier's Things, but you're the first person I've heard say it isn't dull.
And, I also like Paul Young's version, spoilt only by those horrible synthesisers.

Great but I still like her better with the other 9,999.

It seems to me we already had a Tom Waits covers thread. sctatchinghead

Something to do with this:

MJ: we'll just have to disagree on the Paul Young thing. I do agree most PY stuff is crap, but that cover and Love Will Tear us Apart are fine in my books (waits for Misery Division fans to hold their hands up in horror).
It's just a shame he did them at a time when that sickly mellow synthesiser sound ruled the world. At least Britain grew out of that, unlike the French who still use it to death.

As for Rod Stewart, he couldn't cover a saucepan.

I think this might have been posted in the past.....but it still brings a smile to my face a bit like his comments at the end of the Black & White Night dvd on how long he had known the Big O

I refer the right honourable Mr Banks to this:

Why have people got a bummer on Paul Young? Great interpreter of other's songs, superb voice, good chap.

I had a good mate at the time lived in London and we went to see Young at Hammersmith Odeon just as "Wherever I Lay My Hat" hit the charts, he was brilliant. Loads of soul covers and a great band.

I like him.

I saw him at the NEC about the same time and it was a great show. Then again as the saying goes, music is like perfume, it smells different on everyone.
