If he is fit for next season do you think we should keep him or do you think we should get someone who can come in and upset a few people on the pitch by telling players to get stuck we need a nasty midfielder who will rock the boat a bit and not let other teams scare us as we are just too soft all the time.

we definately need a willie boland type player who can break the play up and has a bit of a nasty streak in him.

Unfortunatly with his injury problems since he signed for pools I can't see how we'll offer him a new deal.

He is doing a university access course. That suggests to me that he will be retiring in the summer.

If you could guarantee a fit Willie Boland we would not be able to afford as good a midfield player as him - hence why he has ended up at Pools in the first place I suppose his injury record.

He is a proper, passing, reading the game, making himself available, doing simple things, making other players around him look better etc etc midfield player. It always amazes me that these sort of players are not appreciated by a lot of people generally ie he passes backwards etc etc.......in actual fact he is keeping the ball and always being available to take it off the defence so they don't hump it forwards and out of touch like most of this season.

I worry about our midfield a lot and it has been easy to blame the defence this season (to be fair they have given us a lot of ammo) to but I think we have a godawful midfield lacking footballers, tacklers or reading the game. This area for me also needs 3 new players - if Monky going to stay and care then left side ok, maybe Brown on right is ok but 2 new centre mids essential cos not good enough as footballers to me. Jones might develop but I'm sceptical and Sweeney for me made a much better right back - I don't think we can afford a centre mid who can't pass and immediately runs away from the ball and forward every time we get it. I like the lad but we need better in centre mid, all good teams built there for me.

Will be interesting to see what happens in summer for transfers

I like that idea - could become something players have to accept as clubs cut their cloth a bit more!

cant believe we are even having this discussion.

should be the first one out of the door, and if he isnt, serious questions need to be asked of those running the club.

Unusually, I concur

Based upon his age and fitness as opposed to his footballing skills I would hope. If so you are probably right.

I agree. But at the same time, surely you dont believe his place could be filled by Jones do you? We need someone of similar abilty to Boland.

He spelt it the way Officer Crabtree would have pronounced it in 'Allo 'Allo! So does that mean his French accent wasn't as daft as we all thought?

as it happens i think boland was grossly over-rated by some on here, who seem to think he was the dogs bolix. he had as many bad games as good games, and was rather foolishly given another contract at the end of last season. another that looked good in league 4 and struggled in league 3 ( tho admittedly this was largely due to the fact he was crocked. )

I'd agree with that. He was behind the pace a lot of the time, and was often guilty of slowing the play down when what was needed was more forward thinking. If that was a year and a half ago, what's he going to be like next season?

I agree that Boland has probably cost the club a lot in wages, particulary with his being crocked almost constantly, but when he played I thought he made a huge difference. Granted I dont get to see that many games, but those I did with Boland in the midfield we looked a lot more organised and he gave other players time. Making himself available for a simple ball, delivering an equally simple ball, closing down opposition creative players, tackiling hard and generally putting himself about. I think clubs like Pools need Bolands - and if Jones is to be that player well great - I only saw him twice early on and whilst he looked eager - he was watching a game pass him by alongside the equally woefull Liddle.

Tinkler was a Boland type and we need someone like them to do the simple, dirty and effective way of controlling, or at least giving decent options, to our midfield. Granted our pi$$ poor season has been mainly caused by an insanely poor defense, but a good solid midfield option always allows the crap defender a simple out, rather than hoofing to yet another opposition player.

If Boland is to be released, which given his injury prone nature is an almost definate, I'll be sad to see him go and I hope that Jones steps into his shoes.

i remember as a 17 year old i scored goals for fun in the northern junior league and thought i was the bees knees. i had 3 games in the senior leagues when i was 18 and very quickly realised i was nowhere near ready to be playing against grown men.

Stop talking out of your bumhole

You played one level up from Sunday league, I'll inform the press shall I?

Maybe this is just proof that strikers (no matter what level they have played at) cannot spot the qualities that make a good midfielder. Some of us have played at a decent level in midfield so can spot a midfielder

monty the other day you were making comparisons between porter and nardiello stating they were similar types of players.
the fact is they are completely different.

I've seen him once. In that game he was so like Porter that Porter couldn't find anything to do.
I've seen Brown a few times and maybe I was just unlucky, but for me he didn't really stand out. There again I only go to defeats.

I'd agree with that, and maybe Boland was the man to do that job 3-4 years ago. I just think by Xmas of 2007 his good qualities were offset by the fact that he was off the pace - I seriously can't remember one game when he wasn't subbed by at least the 60th-70th minute, probably the most important time of the game. A harrying type of midfielder needs either the hunger and the legs or a mind that's 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the game (Makelelesque I suppose?). The latter's hard to come by in League One, so you'd have to opt for the former. I don't see Jones as a natural successor to this role either, he's more direct than that.

One point on the wages thing; footy clubs insure against injuries so his wages will not have been paid by Pools.

I believed those statements to be true at the time I made them. As it happens, they were. If you say it'll rain in July and it eventually does in November, are you right?? Only if you choose that way to vindicate yourself.
