In 'The Sun' today, as they say "a tribute to some of the people who have made this country great" in the centre spread. It's basically a picture of 83 people in the style of the Beatles Sgt Peppers lonely heart club band cover. Fair enough it is Saint George's day after all BUT...

Fooking wedged in between people like Charlie Chaplin, Henry VIII, The Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill, and Lord Nelson to name a few is Jade bastad Goody, what the fook???!!! banghead banghead banghead

The publication should be closed down and the people responsible for creating this monster should be sent to the Tower, unbelievable!!!

Jade Goody is as popular/prominent as she is because the ENGLISH PEOPLE have made her that way.
If you want to be proud to be English then you have to accept that Jade Goody is one of your own.

Jade Goody is popular/prominent because she sadly died of cancer. The media circus created this monster, at the time she was diagnosed she was about as popular as a fart in a space suit and they (the media) didn't want to know her after the race row.

To even mention her in any list of the most prominent Englishmen in history is completely laughable. She was one of our own but she certainly doesn't make me feel proud, quite the opposite in fact.

But all of this shouting about Saint George is exactly the same mentality as the mourning over Jade Goody. Its pure & simple tabloid media generated hype.

True, but I don't really see anyone shouting about it apart from the media, I don't or have never known anyone who's ever done anything to celebrate St George Day. It's just the elevation to sainthood because she's dead that gets me, I mean she was stood behind Henry VIII and Churchill FFS, I now see were the Diana comparisons have come from, quite astute whoever first made it.

Its purely a reaction to the way "St Patricks weekend" is now a big event up & down the country.
Lets face it the Patricks carry on is nothing more than a Guinness marketing ploy, but our press have to 'stick up for the white man'.
Its embarrassing

St Georges Day is actually a long held tradition hijacked by the mass media..
Quote:
St George's Day was a major feast and national holiday in England on a par with Christmas from the early 15th century.[2] However, this tradition had waned by the end of the 18th century after the union of England and Scotland.[

so hardly a modern invention...

the main problem with English is they have lost their national identity and they identify moe with being "British" rather than English...

Youse lot critising my stance should try n work with a load of rabid jocks n then you may understand my stance...

Just read on the BBC site plans are being made for both Jane Goody the musical and Jane Goody the fillum, now this has gone way too far, maybe Max Clifford will bring out the Jane Goody shuttlecock based on a photo of her in her wedding dress. refred

Mr Point, I am totally with you as regards the concept of celebrating an Englishness day. I just don't think Santo Georgio fits the bill. But it's going to be a long hard struggle to actually get people to see some relevance in what we're celebrating.

If you want a saint, I offer you St Aidan, St Cuthbert, St Alban, who at least were totally English and who actually did something provable.
Unless you really believe in dragons that is. I suppose if mythical slayings are your cup of tea we could always celebrate Frodo's day. He might have been a Hobbit, but Tolkien made sure he was unmistakeably an ENGLISH hobbit.

Anyway, as I said earlier, I really do like the flag. Mr Geroge is going to have to give it up!!

St George was persecuted for his Christian beliefs, and was adopted as the patron saint of the Crusades on account of this. I agree a bit tenuous link, but history is very steeped now and it would be difficult to change something accepted through the generations.
They'd have tpo have a major refit at Windsor Castle, that's for certain!! St George's chapel, the order of the Garter etc etc!!!

Malta's towns have festivals lasting about a week at a time. When one town's festival ends, anothe rtown has their festival, etc etc.
Victoria, the capital of Gozo, has a week's festival celebrating St George. I passed through there, and the number of St George's flags was unbelievable!! I bet there aren't that many in England!!!
There was a flag on a hillside outside the town, must have been as big as a field!!! It blocked out the sun!!!!!

Exactly, he was the figure-head for a single issue in which people who lived in England were off to fight people who lived in France.
On what other occasions but war is it possible to define Englishness at all?

You will find the answer here:

(can be a bit tedious at times but a good work of observation).

Sorry, but no I won't. I'll find some facts that apply to some English people and not others, and other facts that apply to other nationalities as well as the English!

She doesn't think anything of the sort. Her book is a quest to find out what Englishness really is, or if it even exists at all.

the cross of St Patrick is in the Union flag. The republicans have hijacked St Patrick's day, and those in the North feel marginalised with regard to celebrating their patron saint day. There are some interesting discussion forums about this from both sides, I read through some of it a while back. It would be very interesting to see what the rection would be if more of them waved the St Patrick's flag - you'd find out then how ignorant or not some of them are!!!

Montpoolier, we may be at cross purposes here.
I was dwelling on the parts of this thread which suggested that people in England had something in common which could be celebrated by a national day. Again, the book you mention is sub-titled 'The hidden rules of English behaviour', which also suggests an underlying unity of some kind.
What I'm suggesting is that because of the infinite categories of race, background, proclivity, etc etc, many of which are discriminated against despite being at the heart of people's self-identity, there is no such unifying unity.
