Just noticed they clinched a play-off place on Saturday.
Howay Gateshead, get into the league and let's have some decent local rivals instead of that load of bollocks near Middleton St George.

that town's inhabitants suffer from a collective identity crisis worse than Hartlepool ever could!!! If they got into the League, they'd still only get 300

what I'm trying to say is..... there would still be 10,000 of them on the waiting list for season tickets at Scumcastle, and they'd rather not watch any live footy than go to their home town club in the league!!!

I must declare an interest when it comes to Gateshead - my maternal grandfather was born there.

The football club were top of the League at one stage and looked good to go up as chmapions. I hope they win the League instead of Tamworth - I still haven't got over them knocking us out of the Cup a couple of years ago. rage

To be honest I still feel a bit ashamed about Gateshead getting kicked out of the league when we were bottom and they were fourth bottom. They had a longer and prouder history than us at the time (as South Shields).
Though I suppose they only got what was coming to them, having done an MkDons kinda thing before Winkleman was even born.

I agree with the sentiments - we need more northern clubs in the league. In the days when football was a working mans game it thrived in working class areas like the north east. Now that it has become a plaything for the middle class, prawn cocktail brigade I suppose its only natural that most league teams are where the money is - down south.

A sad reflection of our times.

Didn't they also have a particularly unpopular chairman at the time? I've heard that their failure to get reelected was largely a personal thing. He wasn't liked enough to get the votes.

I have to admit those christmas cards seem to have worked wonders for us. It didn't take a lot to sway opinion.

P.S. if you're wondering what I'm on about ........ nah ... you had to BE there.
