Doesn't anyone here make their own pies? They beat the bought ones by parsecs.

I have been trying to convince Chinese bakers for over two years that pies would be a great seller. Then they present me with something out of a steamer, which incidentally aren't too bad and they think it's a pie. No, it's meat in steamed pastry which is white and soft. It should be brown and crispy.

But I would donate a bollock for pie and peas. The nearest I know is in Kuala Lumpur...

Our lass makes ellish pies, even making her own pastry rather than using processed stuff. Beef in stout, fish and leek, sausagemeat and apricot....I'll just wipe the slaver off the keyboard.

By the way, does anyone think stargazy pies are a practical joke by the Cornish that people take seriously? I mean, a whole fish in a pie with the heads and tails sticking out? Maybe whoever invented it was really lazy and/or pissed and couldn't be bothered to chop the fish up.

It was "Constantinople" in my school 'cos we were all world-aware intellectuals, not drab political historians. :smileysarebackbutwhatthefook:

Certainly stargazy pies really exist. Has no-one read 'The Mousehole Cat', by Antonia Barber?

Here's Tom the fisherman, setting off for work: "Tomorrow night, Mowzer, my handsome, we shall eat morgy-broth, baked hake, ling, fairmaids, soused scad and star-gazy pie."

Holch's pies, in Harrogate used to be lovely, and the smell was divine, if you were walking past the shop when they were baking them.
But generally, I make me own, like Mrs Nottingham.

ps Is Holch's still there, Talbot? Or anyone?

Ah yes, The Mousehole Cat, of course, who's never read that!*
So the stargazy pie was invented in 1991 then?

* (quickly looks up Antonia Barber in Google...)

When I lived in Paris I introduced a whole load of people to pies but I was only making a rod for my own back: "Kem on, make us ze ozer pie zen!".

Really, Richard, you know nothing. No wonder Parisians have to speak to you in pidgin english.

The Mousehole Cat is based on an old Cornish legend, and so stargazy pie was invented long ago.
