When Mandelson walks into a room, and if there is no one of use to him, he walks out and ignores everyone else.

You have to say he's a bit fascinating, though. He's so good at getting exactly what he wants, and so totally uncaring of how many people know how unscrupulous he is, in the process. Compared with the many greaseball politicians who try to pull similar coups and aren't quite clever enough, I admire him (as long as he's nowhere near me!)
He's like a member of the Borgia family in mediaeval Italy

the lass who splattered him was correct when she said he has green slime coursing through his veins - never a truer word spoken, although what she did was pointless

Mandelson is a grade A bounder! The best thing that ever happened to this town? Your having a laugh, if you mean the marina , it would of happened anyway, Hartlepool was on its knees and is again, maybe mandy should come back or do you trust the two incumbents and so called pools fans Wright and Drummond, farkin ars*holes, who let the hospital close and subsequently 500 jobs leave the town. Arthur Scargill would of been a great MP for the town, Mandleson slimy toad in the right place at the right time, Even used HUFC to gain popularity , Tw*t.

You mean, you don't know who Arthur Scargill, Chairman of the National Union of Mineworkers from 1981 to 2000, the leader during The Miners Strike of 1984 to 1985, the most notorious opposer there has ever been of a British government during a time of national crisis, and what's more, the Socialist Labour Party candidate for the Harltlepool Parliamentary constituency in 2001, beaten by Peter Mandelson, is!

I wasn't even born in the 1980s, but even I know who Arthur Scargill is !

Got to have been, because I can't think of any other people that wouldn't know really who Arthur Scargill was.

Well, those of them that aren't interested in politics, yeah.

But there was a mention on BBC Breakfast about the strike 25 years on, they had hoped to interview him - it's pretty easy now for all those who watch to know he is, seeing as the Miner's Strike made him notorious.

Arthur Scargill was the leader of the NUM... ??? He tried to do what one of predecessors done and bring down a government by going on strike... Thatcher wasn't too happy about the fact they'd done in the first place (to soomeone called ted teeth or somthing) so she decided to stop him.

The main crux of the thing is that if Scargill had obeyed the law and had a ballot the strike would've been successful. As it was he thought he could bully everyone to go on strike without one.

The rest as they say is history..

Scargill is now a bigger bounder then Sussex, he managed to get about six votes in the last local election he stood for, the bounder

Back to the original topic, in some countries, she'd have got shot for trying it. You don't know what she was throwing and because she's some self proclaimed eco warrior it's all OK eh? Acts like that are undermining democracy, ... just another attention seeker.

I agree with Snowy. The woman concerned reported that as she walked away, police were grinning at her and telling her to have a nice day. The same police who're photographing peaceful protestors on legal demos, and keeping their records on a database for 7 years??

funny how these attention seekers always follow up their original petulant acts with a carefully scripted justification for the 'meeja'.. but she was well spoken, presentable and literate, so it's ok then eh?

since when did the workers achieve anything by not breaking the law? The rich dont have to break the law, because they make the laws, to suit themselves. Scargill had ballots twice before the strike and the miners rejected strike action( strange that given that they were made out as the enemy within, commies trying to overthrow the gov and everything so say good about being british) sometimes you have to use underhand tactics to get the men into battle, Jesus , how many great british army generals sacrificed men deliberately in the short term for what was deemed a greater good in the long term.

I know exactly what you mean, but workers have never achieved very much either by breaking or not breaking the law and, as a class, probably never will. It's all a bit of a dead loss.

It was just an empty gesture, that I'm sure Mandelson will not be the slightest bit bothered about. If anything he will probably look on it as a positive, thinking that the public will look on him as being hard done by.

But there was a close understanding between for instance the methodist church and the working class towards self improvement i.e. taking the pledge against alcohol, so it wasn't just the unions it was more a movement in society...y'know that consensus thing.

The last two people in the world who I'd expect to be discussing a pledge against alcohol are the two protagonists, Mr Frodraff and Mr Mutley........

I don't think the methodists had quite the influence the unions did

Anyway, the Mandelson woman is going to be charged now, apparently.
