I'm working in Bournemouth this week, can anyone recommend any decent pubs? Preferably ones that sell cask ale.

Best bet is the goat & tricycle on west hill road, a quick word of warning avoide any type of Badger beer it's rank, not sure if they still sell it but wessex steam ale is a decent pint.

The only Bournemouth pub in my Good Pub Guide is the Goat and Tricycle on West Hill Road. Says it's a 'rambling Edwardian local' with Wadworth's and guest beers, and farm cider.
Also says it has lots of bric a brac 'including hundreds of hats and helmets'. So you can have a good time dressing up while you're getting drunk

Buggerit...written all that and then see blue found it first

Anything with the Mr Mutley Star above the door will be fine. There's quite a few on the seafront.

When I've looked online it appears there's loads of gay bars down there, so

'including hundreds of hats and helmets'.

do you reckon this could be code for something queer?

Certainly not. I've researched it fully.

On the other hand it's said to be a family pub also frequented by students, so there might be a few undesirable juveniles

Funny that, we went into a pub there in 97, down from Boscombe and it advertised an 80's night, but it was also showing footy on the telly... but the 80's night was literally that, they were all in their 80's  .... and we caught the Karaoke ending, with 'Nearer my God to thee' followed by 'I've got a 'luverly' bunch of coconuts'... we didn't stay.
