At a U2 concert in Sydney, pretentious lead singer Bono asks the audience for silence.

Then in the quiet, he starts to slowly clap his hands.
Holding the audience in total silence, he says into the microphone,
“Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies.”

An “Aussie” voice from near the front pierces the silence,
“Well, stop fuck ing clapping, ya dickhead.”

Elvis, a serious question. The EC song 'Shipbuilding' was supposed to be a protest against the Falklands war - I've listened to it and can't make out how it is. Am I missing some subconsious theme in that song ?

And pay all our taxes too while they're there, eh.

So who would you like to issue pleas on behalf of the impoverished?

(P.S., this is not meant to imply that Bono hasn't lost the plot!)

Honestly, I saw U2 VERY early on (supporting the Jam) and they were excellent...sadly I also witnessed them live a few short years later when that crunt used the gig to get his short-sighted political crap across. There were sections of that gig where the political rants were longer than the songs themselves..I left early (got the ten-to-ten train home!) and haven't listened to them since.

Same with Weller, although I've forgiven him after Stanley Rd and his nod towards E.L.O/ The Move.

Billy Bragg I despise with a passion. Music for people who can't be arsed to think.

This is why I like Elvis Costello so much.

Well this is my nomination of the best post of the year couldn't agree with you more clappp clappp clappp clappp clappp clappp

What's wrong with Billy Bragg? he raises worthwhile issues in nicely-put-together tunes.

I remember Reading festival in about 91.
At the front, waiting for The Pixies to come on I think.
Just had to stand through Billy Bragg first.
We were taking the mick, who the fuck wants to watch Billy Bragg? and all that, sounds like your neighbour singing pissed through the wall.
And he came on and the place went ape-shit.
I dont have a problem with his politics or lyrics.
In fact, Red to Blue is a fantastic song.
Saw him on questiontime or something ages ago singing live whilst these politicians watched. And the face on the tory was great, cause the lyrics were pretty fine and also scathing.
But his voice?
Makes Bob Dylan sound like aretha franklin

Now I know you are joking.

In what way? This is my FAVOURITE E.C argument btw, so be prepared and answer carefully.

Wyatt's version is good, but E.C's is perfection.

CCS version of "Whole Lotta Love" is better than Led Zeps by a mile....

I'll see your CCS and raise you labelled with love kevin rowlands

Queen, well that just staggers me. Apart from "Now I'm Here", which I quite like and always did, before Cowboy starts telling you he found that single in my boxes at home..

Oh, and how much better is McFly's version of "Don't Stop Me Now" than Freddies?

Was down me Mother's this morning and needed the toilet but she's moved the Our Wullie Annual from the lavvy!!!!

So I dipped into my bag of Fanzines and settled down to read one from 1993!!!! :sweet:

You were in that issue praising Freddie Mercury!!!!

Ok Ok....you were saying how shite he was/is!!!!

I'll judge the fella on his music. what he did at his parties and in his bedroom have no impact on me. and he made some stonking songs. There are a many highlights (and admittedly, a fair bit of filler) on the first album, Jazz, Night at the Opera, and there's a few other class songs scattered around their back catalogue. And Freddie had an immense singing voice.

Licking opium from the rectums of upturned Japanese schoolchildren at parties does not make you a good singer.

I don't feel bad about letting you go
I just feel sàd about letting you know

That's one of my favourite couplets!

Very nearly matched by Kirsty's
"and when at last it didn't ring, I knew it wasn't you"

Can't say I like much else Braggy does tho'.
