I'm guessing he may have stayed the night, to be available for tonight's bash.

No, that latest pissed driving ban ran out just before Christmas. Watch this space though, he is after all a serial drink driver; 3 x DD convictions, 1 x death by wreckless driving whilst drunk and a plain old (non fatal) reckless drink driving.

But he used to kick a football about so thats ok.

He is the Hartlepool version of Lee Hughes only a lot worse.

Funny that, I was having a conversation with someone who was arguing anyone with a conviction should be the first to lose their job in the event of job cuts. I mentioned he had a drink drive conviction....... he said "Drink driving?... that's not a proper criminal offence, drink drivers aren't real criminals" . with that attitude.

The night went very well and craking band, on the subject of BoB Newton I dont think anyone condones drink driving, but it wasnt about his private life, BoB newton was up at pools for the centenary bash, and talked to many fans about his playing days and time at pools, thats all they were interested in, and by his reception at the borough hall, i think that so were the 500 people who were there, football issues for the fans, his private life 2 different things.

Mr i your post is pathetic and repetitive
if you had attended the centenary bash you would have seen Bob in action everyone on the tables last night was visited by Bob and he got a great welcome
he made it his business to vist the fans of the club and enjoy the celebration of 100 years of which he was a great part

Oh sorry, forgive me if I don't hero worship someone who killed a young lad because he was pissed then followed that up a few years later with another drink driving charge along with reckless driving. Then a matter of two years ago yet another DD conviction.

You can't just take parts of peoples lives and ignore the rest. Harry Shipman apparently had a great bedside manner and Fred West's pointing up couldn't be faulted.

When I was 13 I used to think Bob Newton was god , but he is obviously human after all. Only met the bloke once after a game in Chesterfield and he was very friendly. He has obviously got a problem with the drink driving and it cant be condoned. But how many of us can say we are morally squeaky clean? How many of us drive to the pub and have just the one or two and think we are law abiding by leaving it at that? The whole drink driving thing is hypocritical, as soon as you have a drink you senses are diminished. You shoudnt be allowed to drink and drive full stop, but look how many pub car parks in the town are packed to the rafters with cars, they are not all drinking orange juice and they are not all non pools supporters.

i got invited to have my photo took with him, whilst standing next to him i asked who he was, when i found out i just sat straight down, before the photo was took. Making a mistake which killed someone is bad enough, to continue making the mistake over again is unforgivable. He is nothing more than a 'lovely lovely person'

Gremlin, I'm surprised at you.

Yes, people are allowed to make mistakes but Newton has shown no remorse.

Tree, I fully concur.

Right. Here we foookin go:

Bob Newton is a legend as a pools player. As a kid growing up, supporting the shittiest club in the whole footbal league, with the worst ground in the whole football league, Newton was a hero.

I was twelve when he had that crash. I remember watching the news about it like it was yesterday.

I have no time for the bloke for that and his other offences, but I also have memories of the bloke as a player for pools and a legend.

That cant be taken away.

The celebrations were all about Pools and their players. Nor many have the status of Bob Newton.

From what I can gather, he was brilliant at the centenary dinner, and a lot of Bunkerites enjoyed his company. Strange then, that those very people cant be bothered to defend him at all on this thread.

Hypocrites.

oh and while we are on................I notice most of the people getting all upset over Newtons appearance, have been very silent on the appearance of George Reynolds.

is that issue or NO issue ?
you were twelve i did not realise it was that far back

circumstances play a part in every incident and some people forget that, was Wigget dragged screaming into Bobs car ? or was it a couple of lads out on the razz?
as for the further incidents if i remember rightly and coddy will back me up but i don't really think it is necessary Bob was pulled up in the pub car park just parking his car for the night when he knew he was unable to drive home. But why should he explain because some key board warrior wants to have a pop at another legend for the sake of it
i say let them face Bob and give their grievance He has paid his dues for every incident but some seem to want a lynch him.

That's a salient point. See, my old feller was killed in a drink-drive accident, at a time when there were no breathalysers and penalties were pretty light. But he knew the driver was pissed when he got in didn't he. Except he was probably too far gone himself to do the sensible thing. The other passengers and the driver all survived, including my mother, who was no doubt a bit pissed herself.
So is it fair to lay the whole blame on the driver? Even as an eleven-year old kid I could see it wasn't.
It is however reasonable to hope the driver learned his lesson and never drove drunk again. I've no idea whether he did or not.

that's a sad story mate, I couldn't have imagined life growing up without both of my parents, especially through circumstances like that.

so its okay to be a serial drink driver as long as you scored a few goals for pools?

No, but PP didnt say that did he?

its okay to be a drink driver as long as you are out on the razz?

No, but PP didnt say that did he?

and when he ploughs into a bairn on a pavement the next time he drives when pished up that will be all right as well because he is a "legend" ?

When? You expect him to do it again then?

what a load of sycophantic old w**k.

Was that said just because it was PP that posted it? Relighting old wars eh?

Who is sticking up for him?

To me, when I was a child, he was a legend. And as part of the centenary celebrations he deserves some credit. For football reasons only.

I am sure there are plenty of other players that have done stuff that others will get all precious about.

If you can seperate Bob Newtons private life from his proffessional & just celebrate his football then you can happily go buy Gary Glitters greatest hits too.
Anyone can get copped for being over the limit,be it morning after or underestimating the alcohol in 2 pints, but when you are done 3 or 4 times it seems to me that your attitude is "Feck the law,Im just gonna do what I want, even if it did cost someone their life"

After 3 convictions including one that ended in a fatality he should of lost his license for good, a good footballer but he's a menace to society.

I did some stupid things, when I had just started driving, in the 70's, luckily it never had the consequences of Bob Newton and Dave Wiggett's night out drinking after watching the League Cup Final replay in 1978, there but for the grace of God go I.

Bob Newton has been, probably due to my memory making him a better player than he really was, my favourite footballer to play for Pools in the 45 years I have supported them. On reflection, with all the goings on this season to celebrate the Centenary, there are several other candidates who should warrant the title of my favourite, along with members of the current squad. But the thing to remember here is that he is my favourite footballer, not my favourite human being. At the 1977-78 player of the season awards, I avoided him, as he staggered about having had a skinful. I don't think I have been that close to him since, but if I had been at the do the other night, I would have shook hands with him as a part of the point of the night of celebrating the players efforts for the club we all support.

Are we saying that people convicted of crimes should be ostracised from society for the rest of their lives for their acts?

id say that comments like this :

" if you had attended the centenary bash you would have seen Bob in action everyone on the tables last night was visited by Bob and he got a great welcome
he made it his business to vist the fans of the club and enjoy the celebration of 100 years of which he was a great part "

have been construed as sticking up for him by at least half a dozen people on here.

you seem to agree with gremmlin that because he played football for pools his personal life should be overlooked at these sort of backslapping affairs.

to suggest a drink driving offence that resulted in a death was " a couple of lads on the razz " is offensive as others have pointed out.

you are entitled to an opinion and im entitled to mine.

I dont think you actually read a fookin word I have written on this thread. All you can see is a post by Gremmlin, that you now want to argue about.

Get over him chip. therethere

you shook hands with big bad Bob you will be excumunicated.

seems all of the board is at odds over a post by gremmlin according to the board police so what?
are we not allowed an opinion or have we all to agree with the leaders of this community.
ADG is right i never condoned what he did i was merely pointing out what i had seen on Sunday night.
it is just as well that ALL those fans who applauded the legends are not ALL board members, as we would have some real bother explaining their actions.
if you read my original post without twisting it around then you would have seen that I was giving my opinion on the night.
as for chip you just can't take him seriously as he is just looking for a fight after the last abuse i got for daring to say that the chairman would not take a chance on dimi and up to now i have been proved right

by the way where is Boydie ?

from the photos ive seen, all 500 in attendance bar the current squad appear to be old blokes who had been drinking heavily.

personally i'd be keener to have my photo taken with the players wives.

oi twat face i take exception to that.
i may be over 50 but i drank coke all night as i was driving and at work at 7.30 the next morning.
some of the people in attendance may have had a drink or two too many but not everyone.
and for the record bob newton was not at any time of the night anywhere near our table.
