Couldn't agree more. A nation full of softcocks.

The media have to shoulder a lot of the responsibility though.

I'm working in Birmingham all week, and on the local news it was saying there would be 10cm of snow last night. I got up expecting to have to dig the car out, and there was bugger all on it.

While the press continue to fuel people's paranoia it's no wonder we've become a bit of a laughing stock.

I agree Mutley the likes of Canada, Russia, Norway etc have 6-10 inches of snow regularly! My Uncle lives in Canada and it was up to the Wheel Arches on his car the other day, Needless to say he still made the 25 minute drive to work!

I've had a whinge about this myself too, But was told the reason we struggle is we dont have the infrastructure and that people dont think its worth spending vasts amounts of money on what is usually 3-4 days of snow per year. I agree with that, But I still think its pretty emberassing!

I drove down to Brum on Monday morning and the A1 was covered in snow at about 8:30am

The snow wasn't heavy, but it did start to lay, mainly due to the amount blowing of the side of the road

And not a gritter or plow in sight

Read what I posted Mutley!

I never said the country was great, I simply pointed out the fact no-one seemed to be 'paranoid' about it, most people I've spoken to in the south-east, which got the brunt of the snow, were chuffed, because they either got the day off or got sent home early

I can remember Martyrs being closed because of the snow, but my mam never missed work because of the snow, but to honest, Hartlepool very rarely gets heavy snow, due to it's costal location.

Yesterday morning GMTV had a reporter stood in fron of a roundabout banging on about how bad the snow was and how bad the traffic was as a result, yet behind him the road was clear and traffic was moving with no problem. Pillocks!!

Then the press/media make matters worse by advising people not to go to work unless they had to . . . course they had to, they have jobs!! Just set off earlier and drive carefully!! Any namby pamby excuse for a day off.
I've no doubt that some people were genuinely snowed in, but how many just used the weather as an excuse for a day off??

. . . . . and in 7 years at Martyrs ('79-'86) I'm pretty sure we didn't lose a day to bad weather either!!

I'm not embarassed to be British at all.

What people have got to remember is that this hasn't been just any old snowfall - this is the heaviest snow fall that has hit the whole of the UK for 18 YEARS!

I have heard people who come from othercountries like Norway, Russia, Canada etc, where they get far more snow and fr colder temperatures, cmment on how unprepared we are, but something you have to remember is that these countries can deal with huge snowfalls because they are used to it, they get cold temperatures and large snowfalls often, so they have become adapted to their environment.

We on the other hand are far more used to rain and hot summers as our climate.

I think it's only understandable that that we encounter problems when there is a very large snowfall.

Workplaces and schools haven't been open because they don't want to risk people falling over and injuring themselves when they could have been home.

Anyway we have seen the picture-postcard scenes of children playing snowball fights etc - snow is wonderfully glorious and it's better those scenes on TV then more about the recession or the two wars that we are in

We're only human.

Too true Mutley. I don't want to end up doing the 4 Yorkshiremen sketch, but I walked to Martyrs regardless of the weather. violin
It was only a 15 minute walk, but when it was pi55ing down or snowing, 15 mins was a long time and you never really recovered from that for the rest of the day!

POK, this isn't the heaviest snowfall to 'hit the whole of the UK for 18 YEARS. It's the heaviest to hit London, and the rest of us have to listen to the Media ramming it down our throats.

As for not hurting themselves at school, there's probably been more kids injured 'playing' in the snow and sledging etc than would have been if the schools had opened.

Afghanistan and Iraq aren't still totally stable though.

We may have got rid of the regimes, but there are still attacks.

This is like 1987.... 'The Great Hurricane' ..... It was a bit windy in the home counties. Now, because we have a bit of snow in the same location, it's the great snow storm. Do remember that all those media luvvies live in the home counties, so they're gonna make a drama out of a very insignificant crisis.

You ought have been down in the South East at the time, Salty !

I think people down here would disagree with you there.

It's 'snowy' and I was down there at the time ....it was a bit windy.

I went out this afternoon to assess the situation. One of the streets around the corner from me is just a thick sheet of ice - I nearly fell over three or four times, and took longer to walk along it whilst I tried to gingerly negotiate it.

today another example of rubbish southerners, I live in stevenage (which has had heavy snow all week as it never melted) and work in huntingdon. Its snowed heavy here last night and i got up early to sort out car and for journey which normally takes me 40minutes took me an hour and a half today becasue of snow. When i arrived at work there is only me and the store guy here, my bosss and 5 other collegues didnt get in beacuse of the snow and they either live in st eves, huntingdon or surroundings, if you put all their journeys together it wouldnt add up to mine.

The only thing is, if I slip over on that ice that's outside, I'll break my leg and will have to have next week off from Uni.

It's not being soft, it's called being cautious.
