I wouldn't want to "give him a good talking to, or maybe a rock climbing holiday will sort him out", or shoot him either, but a longer sentence would help to make the streets safer from people like him.

Give him as much smack as he wants for a fortnight then make him rattle for a week, then repeat until shadow of former self. Then put to work painting the Forth Bridge in November until February dressed only in paper overalls. Then deliver trussed to the gates of Holloway nick.
