I heard Century the other night in the car and on the football phone in they were wittering on about a successor to Roy Keane. One named mentioned was Phil Brown and Horswill said it would be a step up for him to come to a club as big as Sunderland after somewhere like Hull. I checked the relevant populations and Hull has nearly twice the population of Sunderland. Funny how people assocoiate size of town with position of football team.
Northampton has the same population as Newcastle ...189,000.... what percentage of the gates of Newcastle, Sunderland and the borers actually live within the actual places?

That's because they know nothing below the Premiership.. the average fourth division fans has a far more rounded knowledge and understanding of the game.

I read something about 10 years ago which was a study on attendances and catchment areas of league clubs.

By far the best attended club in relation to population size and proximity to 'big' clubs was Burnley.

The worst was Reading, as their catchment area is/was huge.

It's probably very different now, with Reading having had a couple of years in the Premiershit, increasing their gates.

Burnely will probably still be top, but I imagine Doylington will be scrabbling about near the bottom now.

In an idle hour a couple of years ago I checked populations of cities/towns with Prem/Football league clubs and the club with the lowest population to draw from was then Championship side, Crewe at 56,000.
So there's no reason to think that Pools couldn't sustain a Championship side at least for a few seasons.
Question is....Is Danny Wilson as good a coach as Dario Gradi?

Official town populations are totally misleading ever since the local governent reorganisaton in the 60s.

Some isolated conurbations have surprisingly big catchment areas; for example Bournemouth / Poole/ Boscombe / Christchurch / Barton is totally huuuuge!!

there are some clubs who should get bigger support considering they are the only club around for miles...Swansea and Plymouth are fairly well supported in terms of pure numbers compared to a club like Pools, but in comparison to what they could get I think both clubs wouldn't rank too highly in this league table considering their catchment areas.

i was just thinking the other day if the smoggies had gone tits up in 86 would our gates be higher? seems they would be in our catchment area,so did pools shoot themselves in the foot letting them play here?

yes and yes. Big big mistake. I don't generally like seeing clubs go under, but in their case I'll make an exception. If there was only Pools and Darlo left both clubs could have grown considerably in stature. Survival of the fittest and that innit? Did they attempt to help us when Gibson almost took us under??? Did they shite - they seen it as an opportunity to get more supporters from Hartlepool. They sat and watched and hoped we'd die.

Ther's a website that gives the city or town population of the town in question without all the clingons, for instance Stockton quotes some ridiculous figure for its population which includes Billingham, Thornaby, Yarm Eaglescliffe, Ingleby Barwick etc, which are nothing to do with the town of Stockton.
