1.write it
2.record it
3.mix it
4.master it
5.make CD's yerself....if not woo a record company and get them to do it/pay for the above
6.make sleeves....see latter part of point 5
7.get a distribution deal / distribute yourself
8. sell either through record shops or at gigs

easy

Good luck poolsdonkey, but I fear Spender is right. Try contacting Paul Balance at Mbop about a digital release though.

chip doth talk sense.

alternatively to elvis' scenario, you'll be bezzing up and down the country playing the music you love to unknown audiences in new Towns/Cities, having a great time and meeting brilliant people!
you cant put a price on that, I know I cant.

I've been pondering over releasing my album for more than 15 years.
Do you think it's time to have a shot?

just do it!!!

When Junior Elvis released our debut album we got funding off a couple of local organisations...TMA I think also maybe 10ft Tall.....anyhoo, we pretended we were stars with this money and for the 1st few days arsed about/went to the pub over the road/went for curries etc....before we knew it we had it spent and hadn't got anywhere near finishing said album! [d'oh]

so we used our own money, fortuneatly they had control over pressing cd's and printing artwork etc so we couldn't waste that money.....

but thats the danger of getting an advance, you blow it but still owe it back to the record company - mind we didn't cos it was a grant or summat...

bloody good album that un like.....

Id Sav's 1st and only album we paid for ourselves and recorded on the cheap in 7 hours flat.
its shit!!

We learned from it though and really only do EP's/singles now.....with the intention of compiling em for an album.

Rough Trade are gonna stock our next single so it has to be done on vinyl, the cost of which is being met by gig money/our own pockets.

It's a help to make a name for yourselves before approaching record companies PD, then you can have a press pack/biog etc ready to include with your demo.

we'll never 'make it' and i dont think we want to
its just nice to make music and have some people get pleasure from it and have a good time with my friends, so in that sense I'm getting exactly what I want out of it

the brilliant people I've referred to are audiences/decent promoters etc.
every industry type I've ever met have been horrible I'll give you that!!
I would never bend the knee to these people

All i'd want is the drink and women.

The stories our kid has told us from the few years he spent in the industry he certainly got plenty of that.

Lived the dream.

Some wise words there from all the posters in this thread. Playing in a band can give you the highest of highs and also lead to the lowest of lows.
Playing your own material in front of an appreciative audience is still a buzz for me after many years. Playing in a covers band can be fun (I’ve done that to) but is not for everyone, but as Elvis says, it is at least lucrative. Some people combine the 2 but it leads to conflict when you can’t do gigs for one or the other.
It depends what you and your band mates want from the whole thing (then there are other commitments such as family / partners / work / lifestyle / etc.).
As much as people would like there to be (especially agents / managers / record labels) there is no script to follow - you have to be in the right place at the right time. Send out a demo with your best 2 or 3 tracks on and hope that someone will champion your cause and maybe advise on recording.
It depends upon what genre of music you are playing as to the quality of recording you can get away with. I’ve seen studios charging £16 / hour upwards.
As I’d hinted on an earlier post you could always go with a digital release, you’d still need a recording of acceptable quality. The advantage of this is that there is no initial outlay for producing a cd (or vinyl) or packaging. Publicity can sometimes be included in the deal. A band I know (Cooper) had a digital release that charted & got good publicity & gigs on the back of this. I think there only needs to be 1000 downloads in a week to get a chart placing.
What ever you decide good luck with it & let us know your progress.
