I was quite touched by a letter in The Times this morning. London cabbies usually get a well deserved bad press but this was heartening.

Quote:
Sir, Last week my father, aged 88 and a decorated soldier of the Second World War, attended the Field of Remembrance Service next to Westminster Abbey.

Travelling from and to Waterloo station wearing his medals, neither of the black cab drivers would accept the fare offered. One commented that he “couldn’t take money from a man with so many medals”, and the other reckoned that he owed my father a lot more than any fare, and was proud to have carried him.

My father was moved almost to tears by this, and I would very much like to thank the men concerned. It is wonderful to have such sincere recognition of his, and his comrades’, efforts and sacrifices.
