He'll always be Stan Butler to me. First time round you made me laugh, then you made my kids laugh, can't ask any more than that. RIP.

Look I read the papers and don't need this kind of third grade post. On The Buses was in black&white for gods sake. Never mind you watching it, it was before father of PtT was born. What possible interest could you have in this second rate sitcom which by the way compared badly with a lot of the early cutting edge satyrical programmes of the day.

Not everyone reads the papers and quite a lot of people have fond memories on On The Buses. I sense it was the poster you were attacking rather than the post itself. This messageboard is for everyone, not just you.

Why compare On the Buses to satire, that's just plain silly. It was sitcom humour for those unfortunate enough not to possess your highly developed , finely tuned sense of humour.... or snobbery as some of us like to call it... a lot of the 'early cutting edge satirical programmes' were absolute cack, badly written by spotty graduates who believed they invented satire in the 60's.

I meant this post to be a means of offering Reg Varney's family our condolences in spirit and as a chance to reminisce, and not meant just as an announcement of a piece of news.

This was in fact a great British classic comedy. Seven series across the 1970s - one of the very few comedies I can remember from the classic British period of the 1960s/70s that was ITV-Made. Nowadays comedies on ITV are virtually non-existant and quite poor.

He was also the first man in Britain to use a cashpoint in Enfield in 1967. A great actor, whose comedy gave us a remarkabale catchphrase and who created history himself.

PoK, I think your correct in putting the very sad message about Reg Varney death on the messageboard it's a very sad day for British comedy, he will join a all star cast in the comedy club in the sky.

Eric Morecambe, Spike Milligan, Warren Mitchell, Peter Cook & Dudley Moore just to name a few.

Thanks blue.

It was only last week I was watching a documentary on the bio channel about the life of Benny Hill where an older Reg Varney had done an interview for the programme.

How ironic it was that that aired and then later he died.

Sad. sadx

I hardly class calling you 'just plain silly' as 'venting my spleen'..... Another thing I don't do is go around acting like Kenneth Williams looking down my nose at the people who got pleasure from a very benign comedy actor who gave pleasure to a lot of people ... not your sort of comedy obviously, but why sneer at simpler tastes...?
Will this be classed as a character assassination attempt or merely downgraded to a vitriolic outburst...?

Just letting you get it out of your system.

I still don't like the likes of Norman Wisdom but thought Bobby Thompson was great. I Like the wit rather than the physical comedy. Benign I don't like. Glad you don't act as Kenneth Williams, bit of a nutter him like.

To be honest, I thought On The Buses was one of the shittest things I've had the misfortune of watching. It's like watching an old folk's home where the elderly men stare up the nurse's skirt. Except nurses are female workers at the bus company.

Still, Reg Varney did some other funny things. Just give me a couple of years while I try to remember

I hate physical comedy too, but for this post, it's hard to be critical of an inoffensive comedy actor like Reg Varney, who brought pleasure to a lot of people, the bloke has died, it's not a critical review of his comedic talents.

You'll find that most comedy, even todays is based on the premise of old men or young men or any man staring up womens skirts or the equivalent, sex has been part of comedy since it was invented. Don't tell me you've gone all PC and are feigning moral outrage at the exploiataion of women and the Dickensian attitude to women that was prevalent at the time?etc,etc..
As for On the Buses being 'shit', you're missing the point, we knew that, but it was so bad it was good, that was the whole point. The unlikely scenario of someone like horse faced Jack Harper winking at a young women and her allegedly 'gagging for it' would suggest that the joke was on the writers part, catching out those who took it just too seriously. The joke was always on the purists with this programme.

You are of course correct and if you reading this Warren I am deeply sorry for killing you off, he must be cracking on a bit now as he looked old as good old Alf.

What was the name of that hospital comedy. The one with The H...A...P...P...Y theme tune?

used to watch that when I was a youngun.

On the buses seemed pretty naff like.

I just thought it was a bit boring when it seemed to be the source of 90 per cent of the humour. Not my thing I'm afraid.
