Totally off topic I know but whats teh rules regarding fighting in Ice Hockey?

Its not a sport I watch much but am watching various fights on youtube and the refs just stand around and watch? Do the players get banned or anything?

Quite funny hearing the commentators commentating on who wins each fight

Oh and my fav....

I think that they are allowed to fight as long as they are standing up, once the fall to the floor the refs try to get them split up. The penalty for fighting is 5 minutes in the sin bin I think.

5 minutes? If a footballer threw punches like some of these did they would be banned for months.

The commentators get excited and start coming out with bollocks like "oooh and its Laursen v Grant, I dont fancy being in Grants shoes here, its Laursens 16th fight this season and he dont lose many" So im guessing its praised and welcomed to have a fight erupt?

In England the cameras would be turned to the crowd and the commentators would be calling it an utter disgrace.

Only in America.

I think it started as a gimmick to get the American public into hockey when it started over there, could be wrong. It is accepted in hockey leagues throughout the world though.

I was once at a Durham Wasp v Cleveland Bombers game up at Durham and Gary Pallister's cousin played for the bombers. He was rock hard and started a fight in which most of the teams got involved. The fight lasted about 6 or 7 minutes and ended up with 3 vs 2 on the ice and a further 6 subs sin binned. Class.

If a footballer took one of those shots he'd roll around on the floor for half an hour, be stretchered off and wake up three months later - and want a free kick rolfl rolfl

5 mins in nhl for fighting. Was ten min plus a game penalty over here till this year. Now 5 minutes for fight or two mins if you drop the gloves and the other guy bottles it and doesnt fight. It used as a method to get the rest of the team going, to add some spark back to the game, or the two fighting just hate each other and want to settle it.
