The term police state describes a state in which the government exercises rigid and repressive controls over the social, economic and political life of the population.
A police state typically exhibits elements of totalitarianism and social control, and there is usually little or no distinction between the law and the exercise of political power by the executive.
The inhabitants of a police state experience restrictions on their mobility, and on their freedom to express or communicate political or other views,
which are subject to police monitoring or enforcement. Political control may be exerted by means of a secret police force (paid informers) which operates outside the boundaries normally imposed by a constitutional governance.

Thats quite interesting. When we visited our kid in China earlier this year I asked my lovely chinese sister-in-law where in China she would like to live. She told us that her family book was in Nanning and she couldn't move anywhere else in Chna. I must say it was the only sign of repression that was evident. Apart that is from all the grand parents looking after very well behaved single children and very few disabled people (suspiciously so) on the streets.

You can move if you want but it's like an internal visa job and very hard to do. It's designed to keep all the country dwellers from becoming tramps in the city. Otherwise the population of Beijing would be 1.27 billion.

They let me in because they said they didn't want to offend hartlepool, and ten Poolies would see off the Chinese Army.

In a drinking contest.
