Well, it's an achievement isn't it: the only Hartlepudlian to represent Great Britain in the greatest British team in the Olympics for 100 years. She qualified for finals of two events. She was just pipped to BRONZE, FFS.

NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL ACHEIVEMENT !!!!

I'm not questioning her achievement - your original post seemed to imply that we ought to go to the airport and cheer when she arrives. Well, that or you're a stalker who knows the intricate details of where she is at all times.

Shouting like Brian Blessed doesn't lend you any credit either

Sorry I had the Caps lock on.

I know you can't reach the airport, but I thought people would be interested.

By the way, THE PLANE IS IN SIGHT NOW.

Typical British disease, celebrate someone who didn't win.

Behave yourself Mr Kent, you're becoming silly, small children are pointing and laughing.

Seems somebody agrees with me about celebrating her acheivements.

Jemma Lowe is appearing on an open-top bus parade to Cardiff Bay (I know she's Welsh) and being welcomed by the First Minister of Wales Rhodri Morgan AM, with all the Welsh members of Team GB and especially the Welsh Medallists.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7581178.stm

You know what else is a British disease, Mr I - children only being inspired to take up sport and want to be professional sportsmen and women when this country just succeeds at something (i.e. the surge in kids taking up rugby after our World Cup win in 03, children suddenly interested in Olympic sport when we bring home 19 Olympic Gold medals and 47 Olympic Medals).

If we're going to produce more top class sportsmen and women in this country and succeed at major contests, we have to persuade young people to take up sport and beat obesity in disastrous times.

At the moment, it costs me £7.75 to book a badminton court at our local leisure centre down here - now with the current economic climate and the cost of equipment, I don't think that would at all help to inspire any young children to take part in sport !!!!!

But surely it is an achievement in itself that she won the right to represemt her country, this country, our country at the biggest sporting event on earth - especially when she was born and bred in Hartlepool, a town supposedly rife with a high rate of crime and perhaps even unemployment, the 20th (supposedly but I disagree) worst town to live in in the UK.

I think we went a little mad on the euphoria of the medals we won in Athens 4 Years ago. Tonbridge gave Kelly Holmes an open top bus parade and we made her DAME oh so quickly for two medals. On that basis THREE medals guarantees Chris Hoy the knighthood - even a fellow swimmer of Rebecca Adlington joked "Your majesty if you are watching - two gold medals, Dame Rebecca Adlington."

Exactly. The Olympics team have landed 47 medals including 19 golds and there is an open-top bus reception for someone who won none of them. Well done for making the final and all that, but................ sctatchinghead

I think the purpose of this parade is to celebrate all those who have Welsh ancestry and that Lowe might just be there because she's half Welsh. I just hope, Mr I, that the SNP don't go overboard on trying to use Hoy to promote Scotland as a major entity.

Hoy got asked whether Scotland should represent themselves at the Olympic Games - it's a question that's also been asked with regards to a Scottish Eurovision delegation - and he rightly replied that he was proud to be both Scottish and British, as far as he was concerned he was asked to do a job (represent GB) and he did it.

Jemma Lowe is not Welsh, she is English. She was born and raised in Hartlepool and speaks with a Poolie accent. She represents Wales cos her dad, Mike, is Welsh. But she is very much a Poolie and could well win a medal in 2012.

When I meant she was Welsh, I meeant that I knew she had Welsh ancestry. I appreciate the fact that Jemma has a father who is Welsh and she has English blood in her as she was born and bred in Hartlepool.

What I want to know is: Why does she choose to represent Wales instead of England, is she closer to her Dad then her Mum ?

Also why did she go to a swimming club in Stockton (-on-Tees) ? Weren't they're any swimming clubs in Hartlepool then ?

If she gets herself an active card she can go to mill house, as long as there isn't a class on like.

Oh do get over yourself. Its fuck ing ridiculous that people are talking about knighthoods etc for doing the hop, skip and jump or splashing about in the water. They will now make a load of money from sponsorships.

Utter fookin' popularist claptrap. They went, they done good they've come home. Three British blokes got shot/stabbed to death at home while they were in the air. The vast majority of the medals were won in sailing which no one who hasn't won the lottery or has a Dad that has, can afford, cycling in which your bike costs about 20K if you even want to make it round the velodrome without bursting out crying at how fast everyone else is going, and boxing, which most of the disaffected youth practice, with a heavy input of tae kwan do, every weekend night.

Sports all well and good and it's lovely that it raises the country's profile, but they aren't saving lives or stopping them being lost. So get your nose out of the celebrity pages of whatever you're reading and get to Uni and turn Marxist.

Here are pictures from Jemma Lowe's Welsh welcome home parade celebrations at Cardiff Bay.

She's 2nd right in the line-up pictures.

I think nobody realises the scale of just what the WHOLE British team has achieved out there in Beijing though (Jemma included - she didn't win a medal, just pipped, but a Poolie Girl qualifying for two finals against world-class swimmers, that's value for money).

Our best Olympic performance since 1908 !!!!!!!

I'm watching East Midlands News at the moment and Rebecca Adlington is getting a civic reception. No problem with that, the lass won twice. I just can't be doing with overblown celebrations of failure.

No, Spender, I know but I was watching CNN a couple of nights ago and they were calling us, Great Britain, the "surprise package, the dark horse" of the Olympics. It's surprising, we have a history for great sporting achievement, but in past Olympics we haven't been up there with the big boys (USA, Russia, Australia ( although their dropping down). In Atlanta we only one gold medal and were 7th I think.

Judging by 2008
China
Great Britain
slightly Germany
South Korea have all had a good games

Dropping off the pace as superpowers are
Australia
slightly Russia
actually France
