You know what else is a British disease, Mr I - children only being inspired to take up sport and want to be professional sportsmen and women when this country just succeeds at something (i.e. the surge in kids taking up rugby after our World Cup win in 03, children suddenly interested in Olympic sport when we bring home 19 Olympic Gold medals and 47 Olympic Medals).

If we're going to produce more top class sportsmen and women in this country and succeed at major contests, we have to persuade young people to take up sport and beat obesity in disastrous times.

At the moment, it costs me £7.75 to book a badminton court at our local leisure centre down here - now with the current economic climate and the cost of equipment, I don't think that would at all help to inspire any young children to take part in sport !!!!!

I think we went a little mad on the euphoria of the medals we won in Athens 4 Years ago. Tonbridge gave Kelly Holmes an open top bus parade and we made her DAME oh so quickly for two medals. On that basis THREE medals guarantees Chris Hoy the knighthood - even a fellow swimmer of Rebecca Adlington joked "Your majesty if you are watching - two gold medals, Dame Rebecca Adlington."

I think the purpose of this parade is to celebrate all those who have Welsh ancestry and that Lowe might just be there because she's half Welsh. I just hope, Mr I, that the SNP don't go overboard on trying to use Hoy to promote Scotland as a major entity.

Hoy got asked whether Scotland should represent themselves at the Olympic Games - it's a question that's also been asked with regards to a Scottish Eurovision delegation - and he rightly replied that he was proud to be both Scottish and British, as far as he was concerned he was asked to do a job (represent GB) and he did it.

Jemma Lowe is not Welsh, she is English. She was born and raised in Hartlepool and speaks with a Poolie accent. She represents Wales cos her dad, Mike, is Welsh. But she is very much a Poolie and could well win a medal in 2012.

When I meant she was Welsh, I meeant that I knew she had Welsh ancestry. I appreciate the fact that Jemma has a father who is Welsh and she has English blood in her as she was born and bred in Hartlepool.

What I want to know is: Why does she choose to represent Wales instead of England, is she closer to her Dad then her Mum ?

Also why did she go to a swimming club in Stockton (-on-Tees) ? Weren't they're any swimming clubs in Hartlepool then ?

No, Spender, I know but I was watching CNN a couple of nights ago and they were calling us, Great Britain, the "surprise package, the dark horse" of the Olympics. It's surprising, we have a history for great sporting achievement, but in past Olympics we haven't been up there with the big boys (USA, Russia, Australia ( although their dropping down). In Atlanta we only one gold medal and were 7th I think.
