We know all the overrated ones.

What are your favourite bands, ones that you think deserve iconic status, even though you will never see their names in any 'best of.....' or 'greatest albums of.....' lists?

The Wildhearts and Thunder for me.

Has Radio 5 being going that long? I thought it was only since about 1993. I used to listen to 'Out on blue 6 ' with Mark Radcliffe around that time.

DPW were from Leicester. I first heard them when Five Live was plain old Radio Five, and they used to have Johnnie Walker on board (1987-ish) playing 2 hours of great music every morning after Danny Baker.

Saw them with Big Country when they were touring their first album (Shakespeare Alabama) and they were a bit like a rockier U2 (only obviously, better!).

Their 1992 album "Versus The Corporate Waltz" is their best, the single from it "Cat's Still Scratchin' " is one of my favourite songs of all time, perfect melodic rock with the best Violin-Line ever.

I think theyre still going.

Sounds good, i'll give 'em a listen.

Some good bands there. In the circles I mix in Ozric Tentacles are considered to have made it big time, that is they have been going for a fair time now, have had several albums, get good reviews, get plenty of gigs and are full time.
Most of the bands that the late John Peel championed were underrated and that includes Picture Center, Plone, Prolapse, Pale Saints, Pere Ubu, Paino Magic, Punishment of Luxury and Piledriver and that's just the P's. Going back some I was always amazed that Red Lorry Yellow Lorry never made it bigger and I'm sure my current favourites Alex Delivery will never make it into the mainstream, however I'm sure that's fine by them.

The Frank and Walters. Most of their stuff is truly superb and an excellent live band.
Stereolab - Consistently excellent. Also excellent live.
The Decemberists - Beautiful.
Teenage Fanclub - Great songwriters and an impressive back catalogue.
Mull Historical Society - Colin MacIntyre is a great songwriter and they were also brilliant live.
The Man From Delmonte - Great musically and lyrically.
Pale Saints - Brilliant. Especially The Comforts Of Madness.
Ian Brown - Although not massively underrated, he still produces quality material which always sounds fresh.
Pele / Amsterdam - Ian Prowse was / is an excellent songwriter.
Phil Collins - Only kidding, he's an irritating tw@t!

Concur with MHS - saw Colin live at Liverpool Academy 3 a few years back, just after the release of Us - in a smallish venue he was excellent. Slightly ironic in that his support was an unknown Liverpool band that I thought were interesting but others didn't rate. They played about a 30 minute set. The Zutons......

Not listened to much TMFD what liked what I heard.... "I don't go out with her anymore but..." still sticks in the mind.

Back in my Uni days I saw both the Neds and Carter live. The Neds were excellent, had a decent support (Irish band called Power of Dreams) and did a 70-odd minute set before coming back on to do two encores. Carter.... well, the support band was Holy Joy (formerly Band of Holy Joy) who went down like Led Zeppelin at a Billy Graham meeting, while Carter played a set that was about 50 minutes, no encore. They were good while they were there, but compared to the Neds.....

Richard Hawley of the Longpigs!!!

He's the darling of radio 2 at the moment, his singles getting MASSIVE airplay and his album is out as of yesterday.

Radio 1 takes a lot of stick but I went to Radio 1 Sound City in Sheffield Leadmill in about 93 and the bill was Kingmaker, Pulp and The Wedding Present.

Beat that for seven quid!!

Frank and Walters were on over the road at the Students Union as well same night.

He was yes, Steve Mackie left Pulp and Richard went on tour with them and then more or less joined full time although he had already started doing his solo stuff. Crispin, the singer with Longpigs moved to Los Angeles and wrote most of the second album himself. It was very disappointing. Little known fact, Richard and Jarvis Cocker produced Nancy Sinatra's last album.

If you want a pint with Richard he drinks in the Washington on Sheffield Green, or he did when Pulp's drummer owned it. Very nice bloke.

If you strapped spoons to two skeletons wrists and got them wanking in a biscuit tin, the noise would be better than Sleeper made.

My addition is The Auteurs and I think its indicative they havent been mentioned already. Oasis are huge. Most people I know have never heard of The Auteurs. Its criminal.
They have ten times the talent of Oasis at least, lyrically and musically.
Up there with the best of them...
