As Jimmy Nail said in his role as Oz in the third series of Auf Wiedersehen Pet (Boro), as he returns from a night out in Spennymoor to discover his son Rod is a drag queen who sings Dusty Springfield songs -

It's always been the tunnel not the funnel.

Dickie up the chufter clappp   rolfl

By the way, this is absolutely disgraceful to talk about really, why are we going after gays, they haven't done anything against us.

So come on, let's grow up, eh.

Not really allowed to talk about much, I'm too far out of touch. People decry it. And after all, it IS where we started. See, whatever you say, there's someone doesn't like it.

Now THAT'S consensus. Is consensus unhealthy or bad??

Surely not.....  It's what democracy is all about.

Funny that.

What this was, in actual fact, was an exercise in seeing where we are with free speech. remember that?? I wanted to find out who said 'you can't say that!!'

Most of what came out was disapproval of inventive adjectives.

Well why can't you say it?? Aren't we the home of free speech?? Or we were, once upon a time.

Now you can't say owt about owt. I know no gay people who would be even slightly annoyed about being called these things. They call themselves them anyway and that's where the difficulty comes in.

I can buy a Niggaz With Attitude T-Shirt but if I wear it I can be prosecuted.

It's a funny old world eh??

Right, I've not had a bit of free speech for a while, either....

To start with, you are not an advocate of free speech, Mr K, whatever you like to think. Few on this board are as vociferous as you at shouting down an opinion you don't agree with. So, it's 'free speech' for some people and not others???
Second, gay people might or might not be offended to be referred to by an 'inventive adjective'. The point is that when you talk to a gay person, ir a black, or a woman or any other of the people you like to snigger about, your perception of them is coloured by what you're planning to rush off and say about them,in a so jokey way, behind their backs. That's just tacky, isn;t it, to say the least? To say the worst, lots of people can't handle this duplicity of outlook, and don't even bother to be polite to people's faces...so you get 'queer bashing', 'nigger-baiting' and 'rape'. Is free speech worth all that? it has to be worthwhile doesn't it.
You are a bit of an idiot sometimes, you know

Well firstly I would like to see some examples of me shouting down free speech. Who, what, why, when and how?? Because I rather think I don't discuss China or my football team because I got shouted down and I thought I really couldn't be arsed anymore. If I don't see the intimate details of the games I dunno what I'm on about. Apparently. And no-one gives a shite about China so I'm told and no I don't work for the tourist board, I'm just very happy here, thought I'd share that but...well......

Now, when do I rush off and say things behind peoples backs?? To who?? When and in what language?? I reckon that even if I had the urge I might be a bit restricted. After all I'm a 'white demon' here where I live. How about if your friends ARE black or gay and you don't really spend much time with anyone else?? That is one of the most ill thought out accusations I have ever faced.

Incidentally, one of the most popular T-Shirts I've ever seen, worn by a friend of mine, a twelve year festival mate, describes all the colours us 'whiteys' exhibit (you're born pink, you have green eyes and yellow hair, which goes grey, etc etc etc...and you have the nerve to call ME coloured!!) and everyone thinks it is wonderful. Even the birds and queers.

Never ever have I condoned, any of the above crimes, neither has anyone who had joined in above, nor anyone I have ever deemed a friend. You demonstrate an alarming knee jerk and distressingly predictable attitude.

i.e. YOU MUST NEVER SAY THOSE WORDS!!

Hence, loss of freedom of speech. Quid pro quo.

Over the last season, several intelligent people on the board have given their opinions on : the under-achievement of the team, the lack of management flair and the price of tickets. In a great number of cases your response has effectively been to tell them to shut up,and sometimes to tell them their opinions are ' of no interest'. As far as I'm concerned, that's the same as trying to shout them down.

People have fought and died for free speech, but it wasn't to pave the way for planks who wanted the right to call homosexuals 'fudge-packers'.

Finally, if you don't want people to get a wrong impression of you, don't hand them that impression on a plate
