I've always looked upon them as being a band for 9-year olds, no better than Steps or S Club etc.

"Lets make some quips about Condoms, cor blimey guv'nor"

Like Ian & The Blockheads without the Humour or the musicianship to carry it off.

I fully agree clappp
They also gave the school bullies an excuse to get onto the dancefloor at the discos too.
I was once at a disco in Billingham Forum & got the DJ to play a Splodgenessabounds song with a very similar intro to 'one step beyond' all of the so called "rude boys" got up ready to dance, then sat back down again rather sheepishly when they realised it was the wrong song.4 of us punks then got up & mooned at them, they immediately got back up & kicked our heads in but it was worth it

Mutley & myself pretty much agree 99 times out of 100 when it comes to music, but Madness is the one band we have agreed to disagree

Mr Elvisc.......you say it was music for kids.........well.......the reason I put the thread up was that when this song was out I was 12, or 13.

It was great for me then. You compare that to what 12 year olds have now.

Green Day? Scouting For Girls? The Hoosiers? My Chemical Romance?.........

At least they SOUND young! Madness....they found a Prince Buster LP when they were failing as The Invaders or whatever they were called, Polydor dropped them, 2-Tone came along.

"I know, let's have a good old Cockerney Knees-Up. Hey, You! Don't watch that etc..."

Utter, utter BILGE.

Those are all very sweary bands like........and anyway, Green Day had been going five years before the 12 year olds were born, which is a bit of an unfair disadvantage....these 12 year olds were only six when My Chemical Romance broke....makes you hanker for the Spice Girls in them terms......

They may well have been a "Fun" band Mut, but they certainly weren't FUNNY.

"I Like Driving In My Car/It's Not Quite a JAG-U-AR" banghead banghead

And which James Last LP did they get that fabulous instrumental, "Return Of The Los Palmas 7" from then?

A few quips about condoms and a daft dance does not maketh a funny act sir.

Their best 2 songs, "The Prince" and "Madness" were both cover versions, and both appeared on their first 45!

Ian Dury was funny, Madness were cack.

Groovy??? rolfl clappp rolfl

Fair enough....Madness - Not Funny....Elvis Costello - One of the most Boring Musicians ever to set foot on Earth!!!!
