Went to see Vin Garbutt last night with John Wrightson in support. Was really exceptional, both musically, and also because Vin was even more hilarious than ever.

John Wright's band is also doing a tour,( in memory of John), if anyone is interested. They're at Frosterley on 31st May

Vin is brilliant. I'm not (wasn't) that much of a folk fan but I did some work with Vin and got completely converted -superb musician, good comedian and a very nice man. I'd recommend a Vin gig to anybody but Steel Eyespan refred NO

Yes, I agree folk is many things to many people and because you like some folk doesn't commit you to liking all, by any means. Lots of folk bands are just boring. But Vin, Martin Carthy and Bert Jansch are my heroes. Perhaps John Renbourn too, but I've not seen him live (yet).

What did you work with Vin on, Man?

Snowy, while you're down on the S Coast this w.e, pop by and fondle the Warrior for me sadx

One of the very few consolations I had when living in Surrey was that Portsmouth was only an hour or so down the road

From what Mutley tells me, Snowy fondles the Warrior whenever the opportunity presents itself...

Which is about eight times a day...........

Hello again Grabec

I worked at the bbc for a bit and did a film about Vin for Inside Out- somebody put it on You Tube so you can have a quick look if you like. Geoff Hughes (AKA Eddie Yates off Coro) is a big mate of Vin's so, after initial mocking of beardy men, we were allowed to make it thanks to his TV royalty face. He is also a big folk head and a lovely man.

I like Vin, but i prefer his comedy to most of his songs - which i find a bit twee.

Some of his songs are like that, but then that's folk....some works, some doesn't.

But his voice was superb the other night, incredible. Much better than usual. Must be that the open heart surgery liberated his larynx

I think this little utility was slightly missing from your post Mr Hills...

Vinni's "Man of the Earth" is one of my favourite contemporary folk songs ever.

P.S. nice to see the best TV music presenter of all time in that clip!!  clappp

Oh right, thanks. I've been searching unsuccessfully for that.

Have just realised that this present tour is his 70th birthday one, not 60th as I thought. Which makes him even more mind-boggling.

Not as good as Bernie Parry's "Man of the Earth" - both were regulars at the Nursery Inn on a Sunday night in the late 70s - happy days
