Well said Paddy - the stats don't lie. Billy was a tough, whole hearted,no nonsense defender - but violent, no way!!

He was intimidating in a way that violence was avoided by his looks and appearance...hard, fair but totally committed. JUST THE SORT WE NEED NOW.

in his defence he will need to read and re-read every match report to get the info - give him time

Billy Ayre was probably the hardest man I have ever seen play for Pools - even Bob Newton said he was a pussycat compared to Ayre. However, I don't think he was a particularly dirty player, just honest and totally commited to the cause. Thats why the fans loved him - we could all see how much he put in for the team.

During the 70s and 80s we had a lot of players coming down here from the higher leagues who were content to just pick up a final pay packet and not put much effort in. Billy Ayre, in contrast, had come up the hard way and always gave everything for Hartlepool when he was here. It was nice to see him get some recognition the other night - well done Pools fans and well done Billy clappp

Billy Ayre & Bill Green pictured together after the 1991/2 div 4 playoff final, nicked unashamedly from wikipedia.
