Bob Newton was on superb form!!

Started telling a story about a day him and Danny Wilson got pissed in the pub but then abandoned it when he saw the look on Wilson's face just ended with the quote "if you knew what had gone on that day he wouldn't be in this job now"

rolfl rolfl

You werent voting for how successful they became. banghead banghead banghead banghead banghead

McKinnon did more for pools than Liinighan EVER did. stpid stpid stpid stpid[/quote]

but in a context of doing more for the club bill green/john mcgovern/tony parry/les green done more than robbie mac as did don hutchinson

if none of these had been sold pools may well have gone bust so in effect they saved the club.

see you can make statistics talk bollox as well

at the end of the day the majority voted for richie and he was rightly given the award.

should we have a cult figure award of our own.

i vote bob newton who was a old fashioned centre forward who killed a team mate and is a habitual drink driver who could kill anybody whilst drink driving but hey so what he scored a few goals for pools and used to do his ten bob bit off the elbow trick in the pub before going to the match.
(dons crash helmet and awaits barrage)

newton, like billy ayre, is remembered because of his violence,

I take it you have only ever listened to other people then instead of seeing them play? Now I know you have played at a reasonable level... yawn2 ...but to suggest that they are remembered purely through violence is plain daft. Maybe MJ can supply us with details of red cards being applied for violent conduct to each of the players? and If my memory serves me right Billy Ayre also bagged a few goals as well as being a very tough tackling fully commited player.

I think you are confusing violence with a level of commitment which was expected in the 70's.

I remember him more for his tackling, heading and all round effort and wanting to be like Billy Ayre when I was a kid, a player with a LOT of passion. A hard player yes, a VIOLENT one...

I only really remember Big Bob from second time around when he was less than spectacular, but the bloke on our table last night who was older like you lot was raving about how brilliant he was when he first played for us. No mention of "violence" either, just how bloody good a centre forward he was.

I hope that in 10 years time I'm not having to defend Paul Baker as being nowt but a thug.

I remember back in my Yoof when I was glass collecting in the owld Greenies, Big Bad Bob was having a friday night warm up before the match, surrounded by females when I asked him if he could pass me an empty glass, which was situated on top of the Juke Box. He passed me the glass and so every one could hear said

" here you are, and don't forget when you get home tell your mam that Bob Newton passed you a glass" which his 'fans' found highly amusing. I smiled politely, then in a voice loud enough for everyone to hear replied
" and when you get home to your lass, tell her the smallest glass collector in the country has told you to Fook right off"

Was that when he was driving a car with defective brakes whilst drunk - resulting in the death of an upcoming highly rated Pools full back -

Sorry but no respect for the guy after that - and did he learn his lesson having been jailed - obviously not he was banned again for drink driving recently refred

RIP Dave Wiggett
