I think that they have it just right with the lads they have named. So pleases for Mr Hornsey's family it is good to see credit where credit is due.

I am sure that in later years when Ken Hodcroft has done his time with Hartlepool United, he will be given the same honour.

Well done Kenny, Brian, Joe, Mickey and Ritchie. Poolie Hero's one and all.

Respected footballers certainly and this honour is as deserved as any other reason that streets are named for. But but heroes Frank ........................ nah! they just kick a ball about for money.

They are all heroes, in a none heroic kind of way Mr I, to most of us Pools fans.

Sorry but this is my pet hate in the same way as Mr Snowy hates text speak. Heroes are people who risk or lose life and limb for others or do something entirely selfless for no personal gain.

Take for example a guy I knew called John Hamilton. He and another named Fozzie were under fire and Hamilton was shot. He ordered Fozzie to withdraw from the position so as to get urgent info back to those who needed it. Hamilton knew he was about to die but put down enough fire to allow Fozzie to try and escape (unsuccessfully as it happened). John Hamilton died in the action.

This is heroism, kicking a ball about as I said earlier is nothing of the kind. Be it Brian Honour or David Beckham.

Nevertheless I don't have a problem with a footballer having a bungalow named after him.

I would replace Allon with the best centre forward Pools had in my time watching them. For service, goals, effort and determination, not to mention his good all-round quality - Mr Paul Baker.

I'm in agreement totally on this one...I do think the term is over used and taken completely out of context. They're entertainers/sportsmen, they're not my 'heroes' but I do admire them....somtimes!

I think that we can all accept that the heroes that you talk about in your example are true heroes. But lots of words are used in the English language with differing levels of meaning, I have often called footballers who I have admired over the years, mainly Pools ones, as heroes of mine. I don't think that referring to them as heroes takes away anything from the truly heroic exploits of the selfless people who truly deserve that description.

Terry Yorath is a hero who was/is a footballer.

He risked his life to save people in the Bradford fire and had to jump out of a window to save his own life.

Agreed, I can name another one too - Phil Stant. But in neither case was the heroism anything to do with booting a football.

I know what you mean. No footballers are 'heroes' really, just icons. I was just giving an example of one who was.

Phil Stant the ex-Hereford player? He was in the army wasn't he?.

Surely Hornsey's a hero though, right?

And this idea's absolutely fantastic, I think. Better than giving streets a completely generic or boring name.

Sorry, I don't mean to get on my high horse but I don't like the term being too bandied about too much for things that are not heroic. I guess the premier league has much to do with this. I certainly don't see the likes of Gerrard, Owen and Terry as 'heroes'.

Back on the main point; is it a good idea to name streets after current players? as Mr Mad said to me the other day, theoretically Humphreys for example could go to Darlington in the summer and score against is next season (in the cup obviously) he could become a Darlington legend with a Hartlepool street named after him.

Calm down Ian, this is general not specific to RH, I just think its a bit dangerous to name current players when their next club could change everyones opinion of a player.

I know Brian Honour came from Darlington, but he made his name at Hartlepool.
