My computer is in the repair shop for a few days so I got my old one out of the garage & am now running on Windows 98.

Yes you often have to think hard about the so-called benefits of the newer versions.
Eliminating the blue screen of death was nonetheless a big step forward for a company that had previously proved incapable of making a stable operating system. How people ever stood for such amateur rubbish is beyond me. Probably a relic from the "nobody ever got sacked for buying IBM" days (IBM of course being the ones who inflicted Microsoft on this world).
