the back four must have been spooked today, having a voice comong from behind them.

He talks to the defenders, which is something Budtz seemed not to do.
He was obviously very nervous early doors, but seemed to grow in confidence
as the game went on.
Will take some shifting if he keeps it up and is judged on performance.

Now go to bed Tom, it's very late.

Tom , I think most of us can only offer an opinion when we seen him play at least one recent game. Even after one game it would be hard to judge him, being an ex keeper myself (who has played at a reasonable level!!! and coached) I think we'd be doing him a great dis-service if we judged him now.

I think you're gonna have to keep bringing this thread back to the top for a month or so to get a true response.

ive never seen lee barret play though so i just wanted some opinions,if you were a goalkeeper to a decent level and youve seen them both then you already know.

Fair comment Tom, I reckon I know enough to judge Budtz, although I'll still reserve judgement on Lee-Barrett until I've been able to watch him closely.

Budtz scares the pooh out of me! I've watched him warm up many a time now and, as an example, have noted how he catches a ball thats coming to him below shoulder hight but off the ground. I've always believed that you get your body behind the ball and the safest way to catch it is let it come into your body, and you fold your arms behind it and clutch it into your midriff or chest. He doesn't, he puts his hands out in front of him to catch if it's straight at him, or moves them to the side only instead of moving his body to the side and catching into his body.

Also I've noted the positioning of his hands when catching, and particularly so with crosses. He puts his palms side on (at 90 degrees) to the direction of travel of the ball. By doing this there's much more chance of the ball going straight through his hands as we've seen from time to time. I'd suggest the palms need to be at about 45 degrees to the direction of travel of the ball and you should have your thumbs splayed out with them touching, or perhaps one behind the other. A much safer way of catching I think.

When judging a keeper don't take too much notice of reaction saves. Reactions are something thats natural to most of us with a little coaching and practice. Of course there are the truly exceptional keepers whose reactions are naturely that bit quicker than everyone else's! Judge a keeper more by the way he can keep hold of the ball and doesn't let it bounce of himself or tends not to parry the ball. These are the keepers who give defenders confidence as are the ones who constantly talk to the defenders
and encourage them, helping them through the game. This is perhaps another of Budtz's failings.
