right young tom in the early 1980,s persil the soap powder people done a promotion where if you had the top,s of 3 normal soap powder box,s you could exchangen it for a train ticket in witch a fare paying passenger could travel with a persil ticket holder, thus 2 for the price of 1 it ment we could travel all over the country very cheaply to watch pools
and never did any of that small but very loyal band of pools supporters moan like so many of today, and belive me they where much worse times than today

tom you are probably thinking that during the 70's and 80's pools were followed by a huge body of super fans who sang their hearts out for the full 90 minutes every game and never ever slagged a pools player off or moaned about anything.

what happens when people get really old is that their minds start playing tricks on them when they recall the " good old days."

the truth is somewhat different. our away following was often tiny ( i was at games in the 80's when it was no more than 12 ) it was usually negative, and more often than not was composed of a bunch of drunk blokes turning up to stand on dilapidated terraces to make monkey chants at the oppositions black players and mercilessly rip the piss out of the pools team.

are you saying everybody there apart from you of corse where all drunken racists mr chip rage rage rage

12??

That was local derbies that was. The 80's were for dilettantes and fops. The seventies were the grim years. Not only did we usually get hammered (the supporters AND the team) you also got filled in on your way out having already been ritually humiliated for the preceding two hours by the opposing fans unless you were playing Barrow, Workington, Southport or Halifax, and even then there was slip ups.....

yes we had a hardcore that followed a mainly dreadful side around pisspoor division 4 grounds, but it was an ugly, painful and thoroughly depressing experience as i recall.

and the fans were often highly vocal in their criticism of the frequently shambolic displays rather than supportive.

happy days huh ?

other than the derbies i vaguely remember sad dark treks across the pennines to places like rochdale to stand on grassy banks in the inevitable rain.

you invariably got stuff chucked at you, though a filling in was rare. i think my first good kicking was at burnley in the early 80's .

we never moaned about it though.

Aye 4-1, thanks to a Paul Mariner theatrical dive to break the post half time resurgence from Pools. We did OK in the first half against the team second in the top Division.

They searched everyone getting off the bus, they searched us on the way into the ground, then they stuck us in the home end separated from 200 Suffolk nutters by an eight foot mesh fence. They pissed through it, chucked chips, bovril and darts over it, climbed up it and spat over it.

The Poolies like, the Ipswich lot were terrified.
