And I wonder how many of that team were destined to perish in the mud of France and Flanders. Any record of the attendance Mr Katcha ?

i'll have to check my notes re attendance but have man flu and going to sleep

click the link re cup winners for details of the players - http://www.poolstats.co.uk/west/penpics.htm

but from notes -

dick hegarty

""Dick was a full back born in 1884 West Hartlepool who began his career with Belle Vue Athletic, whilst working as a labourer on a blast furnace at the local Steelworks. He later joined West Hartlepool Perseverance appearing in around 24 games for them in 1902-3. He next joined Northern League amateurs West Hartlepool making his debut in the Northern League against South Bank in October 1903. He won the FA Amateur Cup in 1905 scoring in the final. After around fifty appearances for West he moved to Stockport County in 1905-6 playing one league game before moving onto Sunderland Royal Rovers of the NEL in 1906-07. He joined Pools in time for the start of the 1908-09 season winning the Durham Senior Cup in his first season. He later played for West Hartlepool St. Joseph’s. Sergeant Hegarty 27871 of the Royal Field Artillery ‘A’ Battery 51st Brigade died of his wounds and gas poisoning in hospital in Gosforth on 3-10-17 following service in the Great War and is laid to rest in Stranton Cemetery, West Hartlepool. He was buried with full military honours at a well attended funeral. Brother of Tom, His nephew Ed was a centre half for Expansion and also appeared for Pools reserves in 1932 and later played for Horden CW and Trimdon Grange.""

the trechmann family were very rich locally and local press says that four brothers went to war and only otto survived but there is a lot of conflicting deails in census files and i can only find trace of one death via http://www.cwgc.org - fred.

The crowd was 4000. (obviously rounded up or down as they did in that era)

I see some things never change.

"The decision of the Police to divert the parade led to much disappointment, one observer commenting that 'the Police evidently rule the world', with their non-consultative way of thinking."

For Mr I

Otto Trechmann went on to become a Major.

He was a 2nd Lt for the DRGA and then was a Captain at the Heugh Battery

He served in France with 41 Siege Battery from 1915-17 - seeing action in the Battle of the Somme(1916) and the Battle of Vimy Ridge(1917) - he was awarded the DSO and the MC.
